I can't drive

So here I am, for the longest time working away on my chevy. Put on my new brakes, got my suspension ordered. The wishlist is being checked off almost weekly with something I order in. Things are just tops, if you know what I mean.

Tonight the woman takes the kid over to a friends house, and suddenly I'm home all alone. I look out the bedroom window and there in the driveway is my baby parked nicely along side the house. Then the thought hits me, lets go for a cruise.

So eager as a fat kid on a cupcake I run outside, slam the front door closed and jump in the beast. Fire her up, put on a dvd on my new dvd player. Definitly feeling pretty pimp. I rip her out of the driveway, and cruise down the street. I make it to the 4 lane hywy just a min later and get a little loose cutting the corner, feels great and turned a few heads. Now I'm going about 140 km/h down the hywy in the 80km/h zone just passing everything that's near me.

Hit the next intersection and wait at the lights to hang a left. As I'm sitting a new VW filled with some mildly attractive girls pull up, and what appeared to be their boyfriends. So I'm sitting back waiting watching Supertroopers as I look over at them and give em a polite nod as I now see they are loving my dvd player. So the light goes I hit the gas and again burn her around the corner just a tad onto the other section of the hywy. Of course my ***** wanna go faster so I stomp it and just slam myself in the seat, this car pulls something fierce.

So now I'm thinking, "Alright baby, that's the stuff". As I'm heading towards the next road that turns off, I notice at the end of the road is a 90' corner, and this road is DEAD. So I hit about 50km/h and cut the corner hard and just stomp the gas... And like an idiot I just spin her right around in a huge 360' and off in the distance I see... Yes a car coming, so there is witness to my stupidity.

Of course I pin her again and swing the car around and get back going the other way like I meant to do what I just did... And cruise back the way I came. Along the way down the hywy I'm punching it a little passing some people my age (22) but feeling a little nervous about my bad driving.

So I try again to hit some corners and just keep losing the *** end, I'm swinging around in the wrong lanes and such looking like an idiot. Then I pull into the gas station and as I'm approaching the parking stalls, I hit the Ebrake punch the gas swing my car around and like something outta fast and furious I end up perfectly in the middle of a nearby stall. Obviously feeling very super fly I pop outta my car, turn the underglow on and proceed into the gas station. While inside I see a few people mentioning a few things about my car and such, so I'm feeling good for sure.

But then on the way home, I'm once again hit with my *** end flying around the road... Suddenly it dawns on me... I spent all this damn time building the car and ordering parts for her... I don't even know how to drive the damn thing.

Meanwhile here I sit at home wondering how the hell I'm ever going to learn how to drive, but it hits me... There is an abandoned parking lot near my house, that would be perfect.

So... After that huge long story... The moral of my story is... I'm an idiot and can't drive.

- Joe

** Disclaimer, the city was insanely low on traffic tonight and never would I be an idiot when putting others at risk. So don't worry about that aspect, I just wanted to share that I spent all this time building my damn car and didn't even think that I may actually have to drive it someday... :P **

DVD players in cars is old news, no one gives them a second look anymore. Thats like being proud your car has a CD player. Maybe you could drive better if you werent watching movies and being obnoxious giving or cars a bad rep.

Re: I can't drive

If this post proves anything, it's that there is a trend of speaking about how safe of drivers we all are. I bet, in fact I guarantee that every single one of us has driven somewhat stupid in their thirdgen. So what's the point of just telling me I'm giving everyone a bad name.

Why not just enjoy the story and let her be. And don't forget my stupid stuff was done at 50km/h... Which to you US people is only 30 Mph, pfft.

I don't see a problem with messing around on the streets if there is nobody around.

Not everyone has money to pay admission to a track to mess around in there cars. The back roads are the only places we have to have fun.

Thank god I know how to drive, and don't live near any of you guys. Street racing is one thing, not being a good driver and spinning out on public roads with headlights in the distance is not the same... then doing ebrake slides into parking spots... this gives you a good name?

One who cannot drive, should not be out hot rodding around corners on public roads... but I assume you learned your lesson and will never do this again, correct?

AMEN! Listen Daishi, I am not gonna sit here and bash you, but that story was something else. I am not that much older than you and I have never drivin like that in my life.lol I'm sure you will figure out that you get more respect when you act mature with your vehicle. I have been in a few light to light races, but sliding all over the road?? I don't see ANY logic in that? I have advise for you..... start off slow if you can't drive!

Re: I can't drive

Well as I said there's an empty parking lot near my house that's just about perfect for anything. And I think it was used for like a warehouse or something cause it's massive. So that's good I can take it off the streets. Obviously given the option to play in a parking lot opposed to public streets, I'd take the parking lot.

But if you're thinking that I condone busting er' up on street, well that's not the case. The point of my post was that I was looking back on what I did and sort of shook my head, at myself.

So end of the story, I hooked er' around the streets, had a good time. No one got hurt, found a place to play and good times lie ahead. If I had the cash I'd make 1/4 mile car, but I don't so instead my Maro is going to be my daily driver. So as long as I can play around in the parking lot, and take some people from the lights I'm happy.

Re: I can't drive

You wanna learn to drive... find a local autocross club. If you take it seriously, there is a lot to learn from that. Perhaps a school for auto-x would be something you'd really enjoy. I go to a school at the beginning of each season just to get in the groove for the year, its a $40 fee, and that buys a full day of on and off track instruction. You of course bring your own car, so you get to know it very well. Plus, you're off the road, where you can push it harder than on the streets, learn more, and all without endagering yourself, your car, or others.

Re: I can't drive

I agree, try to go to an autocross meet in town. You can learn a lot by it, its harder than it looks. If you have an automatic, leave it in 2nd gear and pump up the tire pressure in the fronts to 36PSi and give her a go. The point here is to learn control while going as fast as you can without hitting any cones.

If you are losing control at only 30MPH then you need to practice, and keep in mind that the stock 3rd gen rear tends to swing out when you press it. You might want to look at getting some tubular lower control arms and a tubular panhard rod (or boxing your own with some steel by arc welding it). The panhard rod is the one you would want to focus on first, since it controls a lot of that body sway in the rear and keeps the axle straight.

The mustang driver acts like he is gracing us with his presence... and as if by driving a mustang you become a better driver...

With our local club, you can pretty much ALWAYS find an experienced driver to ride with you, at every event. Giving you tips..

Re: I can't drive

Damn that's a good idea, I'd love to be able to handle my car well. Not only for the fun aspect of it, but knowing how to drive better obviously has no down sides. I should look into it around here, I never see many muscle cars, or even tuners around here. But there is a huge festival and drag race tourny for like a whole week only an hour away from here. Maybe I'll pry myself away from the wife and kids for a day and check it out.

Any of you guys use your car for more than just the 1/4 mile? Would be sweet to hear from some of the guys who use their car in courses and the autox just to hear some of the mods they've done.

Thanks again fellas

Please turn around and walk out of this thread before it turns into another of the same thing, I stay and the thirdgen owner looks like a moron. I am gracing you with my precense, if not it would be a bunch of people like you on here and NO outsiders who know more about cars than what a stock 305 can do. Trust me, my knowledge has gone a LONG way on here... I have probably had 500+ PMs about my knowledge, you dont even have 500 posts...

Lots of horn tooting there. Sense of inadequecy? Anybody that has to say that they are infact gracing someone elses presence, really must think the world of themselves. There are plenty of other folks on here, with plenty of knowledge, that don't find the need brag themselves silly with it.

All the knowledge in the world won't do you any good if you don't know how to say something without pissing everybody off. Its kinda like try to put 500hp down through a fwd chassis w/ 205 width street tires, it makes a lot of noise and smoke, but doesn't get much done.

You thirdgen owners sure come out of the woodwork when another one of you is being attacked huh? I only talk up my knowledge when some loser tries to call me out on it... Thank you, try again!

Re: I can't drive

listen guys...25thmustang is pretty knowledgable.....cocky but knowledable. Granted I do not agree sometimes with some of the comments he makes or some of the claims, but he has displayed his knowledge of our cars and cars in general. The fact that he is cocky is besides the point. The point is the wild night Daishi had with his car. If you want to go have a who is the bigger man contest, do it in PM's.

Re: I can't drive

Don't feel bad Daishi.... I bought my maro with a stick in it and had never driven one before. boy did I feel like a tool getting up to a parking lot where I could learn. Your idea of trying it out in a parking lot is great. Get a feel for when the tires will break free and so forth... just remember that rwd becomes a completely different animal in the rain or pretty in anything other than bright sunny summer weather.

That was my own two cents, not for anybody else. I'm not sure what your deal is with the Lucid and his original comment, but when you made the conclusion that you were in fact "gracing us with your presence," I drew my own conclusions. Coming across like a jerk is your choice, I simply made the point that the way you say something has a lot to do with how its received. Tell somebody your better and smarter than them, and that they should be honored you spend 5 minutes typing a reply to them might not be the most effective way to capture your audience,l you're more likely to turn them from you. Daishi, enjoy it while you can. It almost sounds as if you went back in time where you could still have some good, clean fun and not end up in jail with your wheels impounded. Your story reminded me of the times in 1970 when I would be driving my 800hp 426 Hemi Road Runner around town and "cruise the beach", just having fun. It was an impressive looking car with dual Holly 1000+ cfm Dominators with a tunnel ram and a 4 speed, 4.88 posi rear end. Every time I got stopped in that car, never a ticket, the cops were too busy laughing at what I was doing. I do miss the old days. Watch for cops when you are having your fun.

Re: I can't drive

Well to those who got the point of my thread...

Thanks guys, I know the cops here are nuts! They are very very strict on cars, probably why I never see any fast cars around here they must all be locked up. I took my car around the parking lot tonight and just the hour or so I was there for I really learned a lot about why my car does what my car does.

I also noticed that I'm not holding back on my sfc's. I had them on order but put a hold on them until I had time to install em. I think I'll just get the order here and put them on. I felt that the car was really rolling around, and it just definitly didn't feel like it was "sticking" to the pavement at all.

Needless to say I didn't expect anything else out of her, especially since it's 19 year old components I'm running on. After the wife pops our baby out and things calm down around here I'm hoping to continue the project well into the winter. So maybe by next summer I'll be ready for the auto X. For this year I'll be happy to work the current bugs out and fix everything that's broken with the car.

Then when I pull her for the winter, that's when the suspension will be getting it's just due.

As for the Mustang guy... There is a difference in being smart and being intelligent. There is no reason that you should have to prove to anyone how many IM's you have gotten, or even how much you know. Your knowledge should show through in what you've written. Like anyone else telling people what you know, and showing them what you know are completely different things. Hell I've been on TGO for like 5 years now, I know more than some, less than most. But it doesn't mean I need to use my post count to prove a damn thing.

Anyways, I'm having a blast with my project so far. And I'll def have more things to ask I'm sure... Especially when it's time to hit up the 4th gen rear and interior.

Thanks again fellas

You're an idiot expressely for the highlighted items, and for endangering the lives of other people. And to think you are married and have reproduced is a sad story, i would think someone of your stature would be a little more mature. Sell your car and buy a geo metro , dont ruin a perfectly good car.

On the topic of 25thmustang, if he were to drive a thirdgen you wouldnt have any smart *** comment twards him about it, he made a good point and you're just looking for reason to stir the pot. Hell i drive a mustang too does that make me someone you should automatically go after when they make the same comments as a fellow third gen driver..no.

Trust me I am not here to win audiences, I have been here since 2000-2001. I have made friends, hung out with people, shared knowledge etc... I will get cocky when someone comes onto a thread about bad driving (which I replied about the bad driving) and goes after me simply because I own a Mustang. Like stated on here if I had a thirdgen I wouldn't be getting half of what I get on a regular basis.

And unlike some people on this board (theres a long story to go with that, needless to say a member here challenged me to a $50,000 race using someone elses car simply because I told him what he was doing was dangerous) take everything everyone says with a grain of salt. If you take to heart everything you read, your going to lead a miserable life!

Fair calls, on both. Haters based on what you drive is rediculous, I can say my comments were based completely on your cocky attitude. Again, thats your choice, and I certainly would agree that you need to take everything, especially everything you read online, with several grains of salt.

I was in for the bad driving comments as well, I tossed in the Mustang jab for fun, and statement of fact (stock for stock I think its fair to say an 80's IROC is a better handling car than an 80's Mustang GT). I'm sure a Mustang can be built to be a good handling machine as well, the wheelbase geometry will always be a limiting factor.

So back to the bad driving... yes, defintely try the autox, like I said, a school situation with instuction and each individual action (threshold braking, lane change, slalom, lateral grip, etc) broken down would help you the best. Going straight out and hitting the autox track is going to be a lot of different handling components thrown at you all at once, its much better to learn each one, then assemble them into good racing.

Re: I can't drive

And I am the first to admitt a Mustang isn;t a handeling machine. Can be made to handle well, but I wouldn;t buy one to race around an autocross, I would buy something else. If you read my posts I don;t get cocky until provoked by people who have past hated towards me. That or if what I do or have done has been compromised, then I will get cocky about it (like any 22 year old guy will).

One of the best mods for handeling from what I have seen, is tires! Low profile, sticky tires will help a ton!

Re: I can't drive

Well, by what this kid said in his original post, sounds like he knows how to drive. He's the one being cocky driving around recklessly, and I don't know about you all, but I don't wanna come across a guy like that on my streets (regardless if I am in my maro or simply my daily driver).

And as for 25th's comments, I'm sure he was expressingt the same attitude.

I generally find that friends who have impressive hp cars know how to harness their power, when and when not to use it, and respect the road and others on it.

And then I have friends with sh*tboxes and impressive hp in their own minds who generally tend to drive on city streets like they are something out of the F&F.

KDW's all the way around! Awesome dry tire with fair wet handling. They're at there best when you get a little heat in them.

Daishi, I'm curious, what kind of tires are you running now? 25thmustang brings up a good point, the rubber you run can really make or break the car. An IROC is a pretty good handling car right out of the box, but bad rubber and its neutral balance could end up very tail happy very easily.

Daishi, some day you will look back on this and it will be one of the best times/memories of your life. I took a lot of risks in my teens and early twenties, no one but me ever got hurt and when you are that young, things don`t hurt much or at all. There were 4 drag strips in my area and we seldom used them. I took my Road Runner to my high school dirt track more than once and tore it up along with the nice green practice fields that were used for football. Enjoy while you can and live it up!

I assume your talking to me, and if so what the hell are you reading? When I said I get a lot, I meant I catch a lot of flak on here from thirdgen owners, which had NOTHING to do with girls what so ever. I am the single first person who will say if you use a car to get girls, that's just sad... So next time, READ what someone writes, and read ALL the words, in the order they are written and the truth will reveal itself!

25thmustang, in my youth the girls used to flock to me because of the cars and motorcycles I used to drive and ride. Now that I am an old phart, nothing seems to attract them. Live it up while you can. I have no problem with you on this site, I may actually learn something.

You ... the antagonist on a Thirdgen website about camaros and firebirds, that sticks his digs into anyone at the slightest whim is the one that is all about the yapping.

Just because you post a lot, and move that mouth does not mean that you know more than any other pontificating chat dwelling 12 year old with an acne problem. The response to any attempts at definition of why he is so sore about Camaros and Firebirds spanking him at the track:

And for the record, he could drive a Yugo and still be a jerk, i know a few thirdgen owners that can be jerks, and its not really about the car. I have driven many cars, and the Z28 is my favorite, the 95 GT i have is nice...but thats not the reason i'm on a FBODY SITE...

Re: I can't drive

NO idea where this girl stuff came from, as noone was talking about them,, but keep going. I don't use vehicles to get girls, as most I get aren't in parking lots, not sure how everyone else does it, but then again, I could care less.

Second off if you guys post dumb stuff, your going to get dumb responses no matter what someone drives. This post is the perfect example. Like I said, I noticed you guys went after the Mustang owner when he posted similar stuff as the Thirdgen owners. Seems people get sore when an owner of a Mustang sets them straight or tells them how it is.

You have a problem with me being cocky and telling you I am gracing your precense, well thats just too bad for you. It's true. There are lots of people here who you guys are lucky to have posting.

I enjoy "yapping" on this site, especially when it is putting someone who doesn;t know in line. Hell without me, you would think all fox bodies run 14s, and couldn't run any faster. Glad I have shed some light on that.
