86 iroc-z mid 70s 350 cast number 3970014 vs 96 lt1 firebird

i have a 86 iroc-z with a mid 70s 350 cast 3970014 stock full exhaust edelbrock 1406 carb and 5speed manual tranny vs stock lt1 firebird how could i beat him.................i dont know my factory gearing but is was originally a lg4 car

boodaddy, you described my car exactly how it was when I first got it. It ran a 9.9 in the 1/8th mile at 72mph. Gears helped me immensely, so did going from a 3.23 open diff to 3.73 (now 4.10) posi. Think about sticking in a more aggressive cam. Should only run you $120 or so for a flat tappet cam and lifters. Total for gears, posi, and cam you'll be looking at $300 if you do the work yourself and can find a deal on gears/posi. Going to a double pumper at the risk of overcarbing it will definitely help trap speed as well if you can find a 650 Holley DP for cheap. Headers would help, but not much.

you're going to get raped...if you can't do the mods yourself to beat him, get ready to open the wallet up.

that engine likely has the old 882 casting heads on it, which are about the worst heads on the market. also a very mild cam, a garbage carb...your car probably runs the same now as it did with a fresh factory lg4.

fixing your problems can be done a bunch of ways, and i'm sure the guys on here will tell you of all sorts of things you can do too. here's my way off the top of my head that wouldn't completely break the bank, but would give you a good bang for the buck:

-906 casting vortec heads
-comp cams xe262 cam and lifters
-performer rpm for vortec heads
-650 double pumper
-3.73's and a posi
-full exhaust...this is sooo important! you can get away with adapting a factory ls1 catback (already 3" intermediate pipe and has a good flowing muffler, and are super available). a quality set of headers. something like a hooker 2055 header/y-pipe.

these are for traction! doesn't matter how much traction you have if you can't put it to the ground!
-lca relocation brackets
-a quality tire. in this case, a nitto 555r would work wonders.

you can do all this with the given shortblock assuming it's in great running condition. this combo will absolutely go 103+mph in the 1/4 and really give that 96 lt1 a run for it's money. the parts for said combo can be gotten for ~$2k. installation isn't tough, but if you don't have the means to do it the installation, then get ready to double that money.

I remeber when the new version of the LT1 first came out. I think it was CarCraft that did a dyno comparison with the old school LT1. The old school was rated at 370 HP and the new one was rated at 330 HP, but really the new one beat the old one in a side by side comarison. I guess what I'm getting at is that if the fabled 1970 370 HP LT1 couldnt keep up with a new LT1, then a mid 70's smog motor has no chance, unless you include driver error.
