Limited use insurance?
I am looking to insure my 1992 Z28 again after 4 years of storing it. I currently have only fire and theft on it. I don't want to have a normal policy on it since it won't be driven very much. My commute to work would cost me way too much in fuel so it will only get driven on weekends.
I tried Hagerty and I loved their quote of $186 per year, but after filling out an application I got a call from them saying my car isn't worth enough. She said it has to be worth more than $15,000. That doesn't make much sense to me. You have to have an expensive car to get cheap insurance.
But anyway I am now on the search again. Does anyone know of another company that will insure a stock 1992 Z28 for a good price? I'm talking $50/month or less. The car will be driven less than 2500km/year.
Thanks.

Re: Limited use insurance?
Were you talking to the broker Lant? I know Hagerty took over the Silver Wheels program last year but they have ( or maybe had) two categories. One for antiques/collectibles which our cars don't seem to qualify for and one for modified cars. Mine got classified as modified and I've been with them for 6 years now. It started out appraised at 6K and now is around 12K so I don't know why they'd be saying that. Well unless I'm getting the boot this year when my renewal comes up.
I guess if it comes to that I'll write a cheque for for the difference up to 15K, stick it on the hood of my car, tell them to @#$% and insure my car.

And more practically, I'd go spend $150 and get your car appraised. It probably, for appraisal value, is worth more than 15k, which is what they want you to pay the premiums on so it wouldn't be 186, maybe closer to 250 but it would have good insurance and better than regular insc at 600 to 800 bucks

I was dealing with Hagerty directly. I should try going through Lant, maybe the broker can help me out somehow.
Also she mentioned that another issue was that my car is newer than 1990 and that they are more strict about newer cars.

I have my 92 insured with Echelon. It's a 19A policy so you will need an appraisal but it is well worth it. I was paying just $320 for the year.

Try calling Lant directly at 1-800-461-4099 and see what they say. I just talked to them. They don't require an appraisal which surprised me and just go by an agreed value. You need to send pictures of the car.
I fall in the modified category because of the 350 engine swap. I said I wanted the value at $9500 and they quoted $301 a year ($261 + the new "Haggerty $40 fee").
