budget 383

Hey I m going to be putting together a mild 383, now I m doing a budget build up. Now I'm having a arguement with my buddy, cause I m not going to have it blueprinted and blanced, he's trying to tell me it won't last a year.
Now my other buddy that's going to help me build it has mad skills in motor build, he's got a 11 sec car, soon to be 10's . So I'm not worried about putting it together. Now for all you guys who did a budget build up how long have you had it and how is holding up.

Definitly get it balanced, and if your going to do it do it right and blueprint it (it just means you triple check clearances and measurements as you assemble it, be prepared to "use up" a set of bearings tho) HTH, Bob

well I'm going to get it, balanced then, and the cam I'm going to run is going to have a power band of 5800, it's a comp cam Part # 276HR-14 and a set of stock heads, ported. It's going to get beat on ever so often but not abused. So how long do you think this should this set up last?

warning

i know what i'm about to say should be common practice to most, but somtimes gets overlooked......

be sure the first thing you install is the cam... this way if it hits "depending on the rods" you can fix the problem quick before getting in deeper......

i built a 383 with scat stuff and speedpro flattops, the cam hit pretty good on certain places because of the lift and duration, practically square lobes........ it was the xe282hr cam.... not to far away from the one you are speaking of......

just figured i'd throw that in...

good luck dude, and i hope everthing goes ok.....

I just put the cam(GM hot) in my engine and it has plenty of room with the stoker rods. How do you like the XR282HR I thinking of switching to the 282 after get through emissions. If any body wants to know I got the rods from http://www.flatlanderracing.com/index.html

man......

thats were i got mine......... they are good people........

i called them yesterday and was going to buy the rods you spoke of to replace mine...... he said the wouldn't give me no more rod to block clearence and barley anymore cam clearence......

you figure it would were the bolt is ressed into the rod but he said where the bolts bigger it will reverse any clearence attributes of it......

your running 6" rods right? this may be the reason it clears, maybe not.....

i'm glad everthing worked for you...... the comp xe282hr cam is badass......

For a budget build up, you the stock 5.7 rods with a scat or summit cast crank with trw pistons. I had the same combo and the stock pink rods cleared everything with no clearancing necessary on the block, and no problems with the cam.

If you don't have the money, you don't have to get it balanced. It's not going to fall apart once you start it.

certain cranks and assembly do require major balancing incuding scat......

they require a 400 balancer and external balance flexplate on a 86 up car.....

when i had mine balanced they guy said it was way off, he said he tried it without the balancer and it really went way off.....

why do you think theres holes in the crank thoriows from the factory???? they're factory balanced......

if ya want to save money on machining, get a prebalanced kit from powerhouse or such, but if you want hand selected parts, it will require balancing most times.....
