TPI runs horrible, idles@3k rpms or not at all

ok, ill try to make it short... i have a 88 IrocZ, tpi 5spd. The car sat about 2 years before i got my hands on it. The car was at a repair shop for those 2 years and they never heard from the owner, they said the car needed a starter and a MAF sensor. Since the starter was bad i couldnt confirm much about running condition of the car. Two weeks ago i found out from them the owner died and the car was to be sold asap, thats how i got it. I put a starter, it fires up great but idles at 3k rpm or stalls out, i checked the idle screw, thats not the reason. i disconnected the MAF and it ran at 2,500 rpms and then shot up to 3k after about 3-4 min. It runs much different with maf plugged in, so i cant be sure thats the only thing going on, anythign else i should check? im gonna be buying a maf soon and try that and i'm gonna scan the comp and see what i can find, but any ideas would be appreciated. -Paul

Car: '87 IROC
Engine: 350
Transmission: 700-R4
sounds like its MAF related to me. a good thing to try thats not as expensive is a MAF power relay...1 of the relays on the firewall (driver side) near the brake booster. i can tell u the actual one if u need me to.

check the computer for codes and see if theres any in there and get back to us.

o and BTW,r u sure ur car is an 88? those wheels are the 85-87 style IROC wheels just to let u know lol

yes, late 88 iroc, build date feb 88. i didnt even realize the wheels. wtf, lol, no matter, but anyway, i should have it scanned for codes by the weekend, i'll check vacuum lines, etc tomorrow. it got too cold after i did the starter. but the thing ran pretty good considering, no engine noises etc. I just want to be able to drive the car for a few weeks to check it out, once that is all good, the TPI is coming off and a carb set-up is going on, i'm also yanking the 5spd trans and swapping in an auto just to sell it driving. yea i know its a bit of work, but im using the parts for my 88 iroc convertible im working on. and i only really bought it as a $400 parts car. Im going to speed density so i wont even need the maf once i swap it, what a PITA. maybe ill part it out, but geez how many more 3rd gen parts do i need stored in my garage
