Dyno #s on a stock 305 TPI

I got my bone stock '91 Formula 305 TPI five speed car on the DynoJet today and the initial figures were: 184ish RWHP and 240is torque peak. Curve pretty flat. The car has 135k miles on it and had all kinds of runability problems that were solved:

8 brand new injectors
new distributor
new plugs and wires

Have not changed the air filter or fuel filter. Yet!

Is this normal for this car?

I have the SLP 1-5/8 headers and will have a custom y-pipe fabbed up for the dual cats, also have the SLP cold air induction package so far. I'm thinking March underdrive pullies too.

3 yrs ago I dynoed my 5 speed 89. It put down 192/263 on a dynojet. I was extremely rich. At the time all that had been done was a couple degrees base timing,K&N, descreened maf, I think that was all. So your numbers sound right to me. I have since added afpr, crank pulley, edelbrock TES, exhaust and Magnaflow muffler. My power jumped to 232 rwhp with these mods. I have recently purchased 1.6 roller tip rockers/new springs/ ported SLP runners/ Ported and Simeased along with the base manifold. And a ported plenum. I would love to see this thing reach 270 at the wheels. It might be a little optimistic so I certianly think 260ish isn't out of the question.

Thanks Dave, much appreciated. It helps knowing what the baseline is for this motor.

I was thinking the 305 wouldnt run either but I have been pleasently surprised. I would be curious to know how much power is reasonable from a 305 with stock heads and cam. One thing is sure they can run better than they get credit for.

i am also because i was gonna opt for the 350 but if the 305 can make good power i'll stay with that

Hey I'm one of the few here who dont bash on the 305 for a living lol

I will admit I bought all 350 cars for a reason though.

Also when it comes time to rebuild, I would find a 350 roller cam core for 200 and dump money into it instead. I believe in maximizing power per dollar in any way possible.

There are quite a few quick 305 car from guys here who take the time to research and test things out.. If its in good shape work with it until you have more money or you kill it :-)

Just do all the practical things that can be used on a new engine if u hurt it or rebuild in the future. U can do cams.heads, intake, exhaust, and all of it can swap over to another 305 or 350 in the future.

later
Jeremy

FbodyDave, what does your car run in the quarter? my car only posted 230hp 280tq at the wheels. You can see my mods and times in the sig. The more I look at rwhp numbers on here I am finding the mine are quite low for the times my car is capable of. I have a feeling there is quite a bit of difference between chassis dyno numbers around here. It may also have hurt that my car was at 220* when it was dyno'd. I am not saying your numbers are bogus, they are quite good, they just seam really high for the mods you have. I have been looking around here at rwhp numbers and there seem to be a ton of guys with 305s and 350s posting higher numbers than me and that are .3-.5 and 1-3mph slower. Maybe my dyno numbers are bogus?

The industry standard is the DynoJet dyno. The Mustang dyno is only useful really if you have your own baseline to compare on that same machine for later mods.

Its real hard to compare dyno numbers. I would be more interested in the actual 1/4 time and speed. I think you are running good for what is done. If you plugged your dyno numbers in a power calculator it might show a slower time than you actually ran, which would indicate the dyno numbers where conservative. To me they are just numbers. I havent been back to the track since I made the changes to the exhaust and all so I cant give a time yet. I plan to go back to the track when it re opens in March. I would hope that with everything I have done to it it would run about like yours. To me the dyno numbers are more valuable in comparing mods on the same vehicle so you can see how each new part effects your car. If you do more to your car I would use the same dyno you used last time so you could have an apples on apples comparison. It is true the Dyno Jet gives higher numbers than the Mustang. I have always wondered about how rear end gears effect the dyno. I am running 3.45's which seem about right for my combo.
