81 TA Carb to TPI

Hey everyone,
I've been working on this conversion for my 1981 Pontiac Trans AM with a 350cu over for a little while now. I have all the hardware (plenums, manifold, injectors, fuel rails, etc) I need an ECM pin out diagram. The real thing I need some help with is figuring out the best way for the fuel delivery. So far the only alternative that I've found myself with is a $1000 fuel tank that has baffles and the sending unit. I was told that using my current tank wouldn't be a good idea because if I take a hard turn it has a chance of moving the fuel away from the pump and it will suck in air. I was also told that an inline pump won't be that much better for the same reason. Other than that I have just about everything taken care of. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks

A few questions and observations:

What ECM are you using for the conversion? The pinouts are different. Just post the part number and someone should be able to post a pinout.

As for the fuel tank, many ThirdGens had nearly nothing for tank baffles. 1LE cars had a better baffled tank.

AFAIK, no ThirdGens had the in-tank "well" like you'd find on many newer vehicles, so fuel pickup was rather crude.

Is the tank currently installed? Do you plan to remove it? If so, you can install a custom fabricated chambered "well" similar to newer vehicles, route the pickup with sock filter and return line into the chamber, and provide a couple 3/8" or so holes at the bottom perimeter to allow fuel in slowly. This would work with either an in-tank pump or in-line pump.

Thanks for replying Vader
The tank is currently in. The car is still moving. I can remove it but I'm kind of afraid to do any fabricating as fuel is not something to be messed around with. I have had a few people mention to me to cut the hole open and put a sump onto the tank. I was told the best way to prevent a nice little explosion is to fill the tank with water. *shrug* I've also found it hard to find an inline fuel pump, with enough pressure, at a reasonable price. I think the cheapest I found was something around $150. Thanks for the better information about the fuel tank baffles.

The computer is #1227730. I'm not entirely sure that the wiring harness I have will be right because it's missing the ECM connectors. I snagged it off ebay where the person mentioned that it was for a TPI setup but I wasn't informed whether it was for a speed density or MAF setup. I know all I really need to do is find the connector for either or, its been a while but I think I remember finding the connector for the MAP sensor but I'd have to double check.

I've run low on funds for a while so I've had to put it on the project on the back burner. But i've figured that since I have the harness and can pick up the ECM connectors cheap it'll give me something to do until I can bank enough money to keep going.

Thanks in advance again.

These links might have what you need for the connections:

As for any fabrication, what I was proposing was custom fabricating an insert similar to what is found in later fuel tanks. Determine the size of the existing hole in the top of the tank (where the pickup tube and fuel level sender plate mounts) and fabricate the assembly outside the tank, then drop it in:

That's so helpful Vader. Thank you so much. That'll make this a lot easier once I get the project moving again. I've spent months trying to figure out how to do it and someone explained something like that to me once before but I didn't quite get it but the picture explains it perfectly. I've saved all that info to my hard drive so I'll never lose it. Thanks again and I"ll keep ya posted as to how it turns out.
