starts sometimes and sometimes not

I just bought a 88 iroc with a 350 tpi and i put a battery in the thing and it started and ran for a couple secs and then died. I waited a day tried it again and the same thing, tried a couple hours later and it started and kept running. I couldnt give it more than 1/4 throttle or it would cut out but i could rev it up high with 1/4 throttle, i started it up at least 15 times yesterday and it did good i drove it around the block and everything, and now today its back to starting up for a couple secs and dieing. The car sat for like 4 years so im not to warried but any ideas maybe old gas. I hear the fuel pump coming on. The check engine light is on too.

find out what trouble codes you are getting, then post your results. need to find out where to start.

I cant get any codes out of it, i put the little autozone key deal in and turn the key forward and the check engine light wont flash, it just stays on. But i noticed the other night the check engine light would dim down a bit and fluctuate between dim and really dim but still on. Today its bright.

yesterday morning i went out and the car fired up first crank and ran good, i drove it around the block and when i got back it was barely idling around 400 the car was shaking and then it died i checked the gas and it empty. So maybe it has been giving trouble because its been low on gas and the gas in it was really bad. Ill put some good gas in it next week and see what happens.

well the gas that was sitting in 89 iroc for over 2 years was still good when i fired it up after doing a motor swap on it a couple of months ago. it is for sale now [check sig]. the gas does act like a coolant for the fuel pump, not a good idea to run under 1/8th a tank for cooling purposes. but try your gas theory and let us know what happens

I put gas in it today and it runs and i drove it about 35 miles, it misses and backfires throught the exhaust alittle, but it needs tuneup after sitting 6 years in someones yard. The new problem is that the overflow can is got boiling water in it and its steaming which tells me its overheating but the temp guage only reads a little below 220 which isnt that bad, is my radiator cap bad and letting the water boil at to low of a temp or what, i had to take out the thrmostat because it was sticking but it isnt overheating occording to my temp guage. Any ideas?

um. you did put a new thermostat in it right? if not that would be a good idea.. also. not very much money for them. Without a thermostat it will not allow the watter to cool in the radiator long enough or some such, and it can overheat possibly. the point of hot water in the overflow.. sometimes it is normal... really depends i guess. But you really need a thermostat in the car

well so far ive put a new thermostat, new waterpump, new radiator cap, new hoses and today i took it to the shop and had a professional flush done to it and on the way home the temp guage got 3/4 of the way up and pretty much decided to ride between half way and 3/4 when i got home it wasnt boiling in the overflow or steaming like it used to but its still running hot. I also noticed only on of the fans is working but that shouldnt make it run hot going down the road with wind blowing in it should it, because it actually runs cooler in town right now which is confusing.

The belt on the car is really old and worn, my belt tensioner is past as far as i think ist supposed to be because i see little arrows on it. Could a worn out serpentine belt be causing it to overheat by slipping a little bit, my volts are a little low maybe the belt isnt turning the alternator enough and maybe the water pump is turning enough, i dont know?

1/2 way is 220 and all the way is 260, so 3/4 would be aroung 240

I checked the hoses again and noticed the heater hose that goes on just below the cap isnt flowing water into the radiator, on my old rs a hose ran from the heater core to the port on the radiator, but on this car the heater hose on the radiator runs into a metal tube that runs down beside another metal tube under motor, i took the hose off the other metal tube that i assume is also for the heater core and its got water flowing but the one that goes to the radiator is not flowing. Any ideas?

well so far ive put a new thermostat
Did you check to make sure the thermostat was opening up before you installed it? I can't remember how many times i bought a new one and it was junk. I always buy 2, check it in a pot of boiling water and take one back.

I can feel the upper radiator hose when the car gets hot and the hose itself is hot and you cant even squeeze it in because of the pressure inside of it. I figured that was a sign that the thermostat was oppening.
