87 year VS newer ones

How much worse is a 350 TPI from year 87 from newer ones?
I know that from 89 there were faster computers, and 90-02 got MAP
instead of MAF (which half says that is better, half not)...
Why those engines got 5HP every year? What was the difference?

Car: 87 Formula 350
i know a small part of it is on the intake side... the intake setup on a 87 is really poor.

So If I am planning to buy better cam and intake manifold that setup should be equal to the same on the newer ones?

You're basically back to asking which is better, MAP or MAF.

Some will say MAF because you won't need a new tune "As bad." Your ECM will still be out of tune, but the MAF can compensate for that *To a point.*

Some will say MAP, because once the system gets a new tune, they would suggest it would run better than the MAF car.

I personally think buying a pre-88 is like shooting yourself in the foot because of the acc. setup (V belts vs Serp). There's no performance gain with Serp setups, but I just find them easier to deal with and more "Common" in performance oriented third gens. Then again, I'm also pro-MAF, so what do I know

But either way, the MAF car might run better than the MAP car if both were untuned. Once tuned, both would run the same or darn close.

In late future I was planing to get Megasquirt or maybe some other stand alone computer - they have they own MAP's so MAF/MAP war is not a problem.
I was considering other things...
Like the belt system. Which like you said is just different.. Not worse or better?
And other things.. I was worried, becouse there was a power gain each year and I was thinking if there would be any power lose after modyfication becouse I have older engine.
