Hey guys,
I rebuilt my 350 TPI and its been doing okay since i got it in. About 2 weeks ago i started the car and the oil pressure went to zero, lost all the oil, turns out it was the oil filter housing gasket so I changed it and had no problem until today. Started up okay after work, took off down the street and maybe 30 yds away my oil pressure went down again and leaked oil everywhere, lucky enough i was 30 yds away from my mechanics place so I pulled in shut it off ASAP. Looks like it was the oil filter housing gasket again...

Does ANYONE have any idea why this would blow out twice in 2 weeks? Ive been drving the car easy since Im breaking in the motor, so I dont think it has to do with beating on it at all...

If you are sure that it's from the oil filter gasket, remove the filter and make sure that there is not a double gasket. That would result in symptoms that you are describing. -Bob

High pressure oil pump and thick oil will do this. Oil should bypass filter at 75 # blowing the can down 100# +. The higher the pressure of the oil system the harder the filter should be to remove (pressure tightens).

Also if it has the oil cooler between the filter and block it could be cracked/its gasket bad.

Check that the spin adapter is not cracked (part oil filter conects to) and also make sure that the relief spring in the spin adapter is gasket down, not spring down......Ie when you look up in the adpter from the bottom of the car you should see a small hole on the side of the spin adapter. Push it up a little if it is there to ensure that it is relieving the pressure from the oil filter. I just went through this same problem and had a cracked spin adapter, changed it out and was back in business.

I've seen this happen too. A seal from an old filter stayed behind and then the new filter doesn't seal correctly.

I haven't had any problems with too high of pressure on the back side of a filter cause a rubber seal to blow out. On our race car, I plugged the by-pass valve so the oil would have to go through the filter. Now I do not recommend doing this with a street car since we were changing filters more frequently and didn't come anywhere near having a pressure drop across the filter due to the filter elements getting clogged. Our oil pressure post filter would be at 80 psi at 7000 RPMs through the traps.

However I have seen cars blow the filter off the motor due to a faulty weld leaving only the threaded top portion on the motor.

I have also heard of the oil pump's internal by-pass getting stuck causing the oil pressure to go way too high causing problems as well. Just haven't experienced that one myself.
