need help

I had someone look at my car today and I don't think I knew what the guy was talking about so I am asking again. When I start 305 TPI up it idles rough and when i hit the gas it dies. There is a strong oder of gas. The guy said something about my mass air flow sensor and I am not buying it. Can someone help?

Re: need help

Your injectors may be malfunctioning... get an ohm meter and check the resistance on the injectors themselves. If any readings are far apart, then they may be electrically failing and need replaced.

Re: need help

Do you have the check engine light on? If the MAF is bad, the ECM will throw an error code.

If there are no codes, then you need to start to check various things out.
Fuel pressure; fuel injectors as mentioned above; inspect the plugs; etc.

Re: need help

Check the vacuum lines, most notably the brake booster to the back side of the intake manifold.

Re: need help

Thanks my husband said. He will check it all when he gets back into town and let you know if he needs more help. Thank you all for your responses.

He wants me to mention that the vacuum line was off of the brake booster. He reconnected and now it seems like the car might run a little worse when he did that. Thanks again. Let me know what you think to that.

Re: need help

If hooking a vacuum line back up makes it run worse, then it was too rich to begin with. When the maf's get older they get leaner or will surge real bad at idle or will not run at all. Disconnect the maf sensor and try it. It should run on the default tables okay. If it still idles rough, unlikely it is the maf.

Re: need help

yeah, brake booster needs to be hooked up. easiest thing to check is what pandid said, MAF. if it runs, the MAF is bad, try to clean it before you replace it tho, and the connectors as well.

really tho, i had the same issues as you, brake booster was disconnected. after that i still had issues. you could check distributor, spark plugs and wires (dirty, or not fully connected), rocker arms (too tight or loose), good luck. patience is key.
