swapping tpi over
ive got a iroc with a 305 running tpi, the engines dead so ive bought a donor car for the engine which is a 305 but has a carb, is it a simple swap over for all the tpi stuff or is there anything i should know.

Re: swapping tpi over
What year IROC? Also, what year donor car do you have? The only thing you would need to consider is the bolt pattern for the intake to the heads. Also make sure you change over all the sensors. Other than that, it's pretty straight forward.

Re: swapping tpi over
you dont have to worry about the heads if the heads on your original motor are good you can just swap that out too

You can use the distributor that is in the 84 if you have to. There really is no difference in the distributor from carb to tpi. Ignition is ignition is ignition. As long as you hook it up right you will be fine. Just bolt it up and get the sensors in the right spots and go. Good Luck!

Re: swapping tpi over
The '86 TPI will need to have a TPI distributor. Yes, they ARE different. The TPI distributor is wider and uses a lower, wider distributor cap. Further, your 1984 system will not likely have the EST bypass connector. In other words, use the distributor which was originally installed on the 1986 with the TPI system.
Also, as much as you might be attempting to make the exchange as quickly as possible, you might consider opening the replacement engine for a quick look at the condition. Unless it has been recently refreshed, it would be worthwhile to at least look at the main and rod bearings, and consider a replacement oil pump. Having a reliable rotating unit will go a long way toward the longevity of the installation. Looking at the cam and lifters while the engine is in a stand is a lot easier than replacing it in the vehicle, and the intake has to be removed in any case. You might also want to look at the heads to see if they are doorstop castings or at least as good as the '416s on your '86 TPI.
