How much junk can i throw away under the hood?
Ok i am sick and tired of all these hoses and lines and crap all in the way and running everywere. I have seen some tpi setups that have nothing more than wires to the sesors/injectors, lines to the fuel and thats pretty much it!. I am fixin to reinstall my l98 and i am gonna be leaving any of this crap i can off. Anyone have any suggestoins? Any clean underhood pics? Im even thinkin about ditching the ac but I have a hardtop so im not sure yet. I dont have any emmisions here

You can delete the air conditioning set-up on it if you want to, do the throttle body coolant bypass, get a set of headers for it, remove cruise control. Any of those will start opening it up under the hood. Here is a picture of mine under the hood.

Re: How much junk can i throw away under the hood?
that is part of the "clean" look
seriously though, i have the same feeling sometimes that i just want to rip everything out.
what i realized is that a lot of the corrugated wire looms are about 1.5 - 3 times the size they need to be.
in one case i found one that was a good 1/2" diameter loom, holding a single 12 gauge wire.
when i have a garage to work in, one of my first projects will be to completely go through the wiring for the engine compartment and fix a lot of the dead and non-functional wiring that is left over after the previous owner did an engine swap

i dont have any pics but i got rid of the smog pump, ac compressor and canister, washer fluid reservoir, cruise control vacuum and did a throttle body bypass which got rid of a couple hoses. that made it look much better. now i just wish i could paint the engine bay!

Still need to close up the Firewall. I lost the AC system, Heater system, Cruise Control, Smog system, windshield washer fluid bottle, and I went over to the new heads.
I can change ALL the spark plugs from the top...I just cant defrost the windshield.

It still has the o2 sensor in the bottom of the collector.

Since we never know what the smog ***** are gonna do, I would keep ALL the smog stuff you remove.

Well he's currently obsessed with health care, but the POTUS has stated he likes the vehicle smog laws we suffer with in CA.
If he makes them Federal you will wish you had all that $hit.
Example, 20 years ago a friend gave my kid a Datsun 510 it was missing the top of the air cleaner. Turns out it was a one year only item. CARB gave me a list of auto wreckers that could get it. Prices started at ~$75 and went up. Could not smog or register the car without it. Finally found one under a truck at a small wrecking yard nearby $5.

Removing all that 'Junk' is step one to making your car completely impractical and flushing any collector value down the toilet. 9 out of 10 people that decide to eliminate the 'Junk' do it haphazardly with no clue what they're removing. They cause problems in the process, make their cars run like crap, and then when they're finally sick of showing up everywhere soaked with sweat because the A/C weighed 20lbs, they pass the car off on someone else or have to track down all the parts they removed.
Hot Tip #77: If you don't know what it does, leave it alone.

Re: How much junk can i throw away under the hood?
I only converted my car to the ac delete because it was missing the whole ac set-up when I got it. I would rather drive with the t tops out than have the air conditioning on. And with everything else that I removed, I knew exactly what it is/does.

Re: How much junk can i throw away under the hood?
ive taken anything and everything out that i wouldnt need or want. ive went through the entire dash and engine bay and took every wire out. i still have to do a few more wires near the fuse box, but other than that everythings gone. the previous owner tried to do wirering himself and made my job alot harder.

Re: How much junk can i throw away under the hood?
why would you get rid of the cruise control?
i think you can make a lot more progress cleaning it up if you go and re-route the wires.
a battery relocation will help some
washer tank relocation
overflow tank relocation
carbon canister relocation
polish up your TPI
repaint the engine compartment
route all the vacuum lines and wiring so that there is minimal slack
same with the sparkplug wires
f-body demon's car looks really good
if it were me, id move the tanks, and possibly convert to manual brakes (if done correctly, you wont notice a difference)
then it would look truly great

Well, you can't really say that someone removing the AC is a bad move. Face it - a non-functional R-12 system isn't necessarily worth repair. The space removal of AC components can free up is pretty decent. Not to mention removal of the condenser - allowing ever so slightly better airflow through the radiator.
I would watch otu for anyone that removes the smog and leaves the tubing on - if you pull the rubber hoses from the 1-way valves, the one way valves will suck air IN TO your exhaust. Use rubber caps or plugs on the threaded portions.
I thought my TPI engine bay was too congested so... now I am deciding to remove the biggest offender! - The TPI! lol
Plagued with a bad throttle shaft leak, exhaust manifold leaks and so forth.. carbed is the way to go for me. It is just annoying when an engine will run beautifully and then run like it's about to kill itself. Unfortuantely, that's the problem with sensors - they sense the wrong thing and think it's the truth.

Oh! I personally think you should do like Project-RS did and just pull everything and find someone to push! Or you could hide 6 midgets in the engine compartment and they could push from there!

Re: How much junk can i throw away under the hood?
Yeah.. I think strict emissions on cars is a load... Look at California - I'm not sure of the exact situation, but I'm guessing more and more "Made in China" crap coming over the Pacific is creating the problem.. not a 3,000 pound car.
It's horrible - I used to run a machine that made BubbleWrap. China could make bubble that was almost as good, and ship it all the way across the U.S. for less money. We could barely ship it out of state and make profit.
Of course, the big thing for us was that to keep our QC good we had to use about 80%-90% virgin plastic. People want "clear" BubbleWrap, which is nearly impossible to make at a profit from recycled poly... but hey, asia can do it.
Needless to say, that business was not for me. However, running multiple extruders was fun - one of the main ones had a 400HP motor running through a 40 something to 1 gear reduction. Doing the math it was something like 400,000 - 600,000 watts of power I believe. Though I could be wrong. Talk about "dimming the lights"!
