New to TPI, couple questions

Hey all, I recently got a 87 GTA L89 with 64k miles on it, after fixing what needed to be Im ready to start opening it up a bit.

Planned
-Shorty headers y pipe, resonator and single exit exhaust and smog delete
-52 mm TB holley or bbk, didnt deceide which yet
-Holley sealthram , I read that I guess ill have to cut away part of the bracing on my hood.
-Holley 255 lph pump

Undecided/unsure if worth it/needed
-new injectors, what would work well with this setup? sounds like 24lb ones should do fine
-new rocker arms, Worth it or no?
-Im computer retarded when it comes to cars, Im sure there is some stuff I could do with that, but I have no idea what to ask or what to search

Thoughts/ opinions/ advice/ criticism? Im new to TPI so any comments are appreciated.

Re: New to TPI, couple questions

Exhaust would be a big help. The throttle body wont really do any good as the stock one flows well enough to support some good hp. The stealth ram I personally don't really care for unless your competitively racing but there have been many threads on this may want to do a search on that topic. The stock fuel pump is fine for the mods listed. I wouldn't bother changing it unless it needs to be changed. For the unsure of stuff. New injectors wont hurt 24 lbs are stock but not much point in replacing them unless they need it. Rocker arms if you wanted to keep the stock cam some 1.6 roller rockers would help a bit ide say definitely worth it if you were keeping the stock cam. As far as what you can do with the comp theres really not much to do. Since its stock the tune is pretty darn good so modifying it wont net you much of anything. There are orther areas of this web site that deal with programming the ECM though.

Re: New to TPI, couple questions

Thanks for the info. The fuel pump is weak, I know the 255lph one is way more then I need but I might as well replace it with a premium part. As far as the hsr it claims like 52 HP plus if it was even 15-20 it would be worth it. I plan in the future building the engine so I also want to prepare for that with the new performance parts. It'll stay stock cam and heads for awhile. As far as injectors go they are 24 years old so it's not a bad idea to replace em I'd think.

Re: New to TPI, couple questions

Well its not so much that the steath ram isnt a good performer over the factory TPI it will make great power in the top end over by comparison. However alittle more fair of a comparison would be an aftermarket long tube runner set up vs the stealth ram. Dyno results show that the long tube runner intakes will out perform the stealthram up untill somewhere in the upper mid 4k region. In some RPMS long tube runners outperform by a pretty substantial amount I believe one comparison showed like 60 ftbls of torque (roughly 34 hp) at like 3k or so. Considering its rare that you get into the 4.5-5k+ region (5.5k max RPM by the way) on the street the long tube runners perform best for street use. Granted on the track the stealth ram will out power it but again for a street car that stays in the low end 99% of the time it dosnt make much sense to trade low end that you use 99% of the time every day for some extra top end hp that you may only get to experience occasionally. Just something to concider as HP gain numbers are deceiving and don't really show the whole picture. However again this has been debated many times and i definitely recommend a search on the matter.

As far as the injectors go try calling Southbay Fuel Injectors
http://www.southbayfuelinjectors.com/
They seem to be the place to go for injectors

Re: New to TPI, couple questions

#1 sub frame connectors A MUST
#2 decent set of shorty headers along with a matching y pipe and 3 inch catback
#3 A good tune up
#4 Rear gear swap, possibly to a 3.42 or 3.73
#5 2500-3000 lockup torque converter.

Those are just the top 5 things I would do. And would make the most difference

SFC's are in the future. Shorties y pipe and 3 inch is the next thing im doing. already did a tune up. 3.27 gear ratio is good enough for me for the time being, and I dont see a huge reason for a high stall convertor right now. Its mainly meant to be a cruiser, and hawaii doesnt even have a dragstrip.
