Any TPI's Over 400RWHP???

So I Want To See What People Have Done With Their Tuned Port Motors To Make Hi Numbers, I'm Debating Between An LS1 Swap & Building Up My TPI, LS1's Are Bad *** & Make Easy HP But I've Heard TPI's Pushing Into The 700's I Want To Get Mine Around 450-500RWHP So Who's Accomplished Over 400 And If You'd Like Maybe Tell How Did It Or Maybe Give A Couple Tips? Thanks.

Re: Any TPI's Over 400RWHP???

As of yet I don't think a single person has gotten a TPI above 500rwhp. Not with normal aftermarket components and natural aspiration.

Plenty have done it with boost.

TPI really isn't a high RPM setup and unless you've got the cubes then its not going to make those numbers. I've only seen 3 dyno sheets for n/a TPI motors making over 400rwhp. One of them 1989TransAmGTA made like 434rwhp I think. However nothing about his setup is even remotely stock or even off the shelf. Alot of planning, experimentation and care went into his build.

If you have to ask, you really don't want it.

All I can say is, you just do the right things, get the best parts, spend the money and don't look back.

I have never added it up and don't want to, it's my entertaintment in life.
I have it to enjoy.

Okay it's just because I don't want to spend over $6000 and not get the gains I expected on a build.

Damn Well That's A Bubble Burster, Especially Spending All That Money & Time Do Get A TPI To 400 RWHP When You Can Just Add A Good Cam Kit, Heads, LS6 Intake & Exaust To An LS1 And Easily Make That And Probably Save More Gas. It Would Be Nice To Keep The Iroc-Z Original Though Especially Since It's A '90. To Get A TPI To 400 RWHP It Probably Costs A Lot More Than $5,000 Huh?

Ohhh That's Right, Valentin Was Telling Me About That. Well I Kind Of Don't Want To Spend More Than $5,000 Getting A TPI To Make 400 RWHP & I'm Sure It Costs A Lot More Than That. But Yeah I Was really Surprised Hearing That Was Your Daily Driver, Passing Smog & Getting Gas Mileage Like That With That Much Power From A TPI. I Get Maybe 8-9 MPG Street And To Drive 40 Miles On The Freeway It Costs $12 With 91 From Shell So It's About $4 Per Gallon So Around 13MPG Hwy. And Thats My Daily Driver LoL

Why are you stuck on a TPI?
The moment you swap out the intake you remove the major restriction to making good power.
If you want 400 @ the wheels looking at 450+ at the flywheel.

Look at the difference a intake change does for this 383 build

Gears and those over sized heavy wheels are maybe the cause of your bad mpg. It's just a part of the sacrifice when you go with larger wheels.
If you're budget is only $5k you might want to think higher. things tend to break at the horsepower level you want.

Re: Any TPI's Over 400RWHP???

What is with the Caps In Each Word You Type? It makes your posts painful to read. I'd rather read misspelled words than this.

8-9MPG and 13mpg highway are way too wrong. You've got something wrong with your car. 3.73's and the larger wheels aren't enough to do that kind of damage.

My GTA with the LT1 and all bolt-ons still manages to get 18-19MPG without Overdrive or TC lockup on a 160 mile highway trip. And this is turning a minimum of 3300rpm the whole way. Usually more like 3500rpm.

Re: Any TPI's Over 400RWHP???

Forced induction will put a stock TPI in the mid 12's, but you'll spend some money to get there. I figured up about $3600 total for my turbo project onto a completely stock 87 350. That was doing everything myself though. On a lower mile/fresh 350 block it would be quite durable, but on my 149k mile engine it's ready for a rebuild after just shy of two years of abuse.

Whether you go LS1 or forced induction TPI you'll still need supporting mods such as a transmission build and a good converter. There goes an easy $1500+.

Also you will want a lower gear ratio around 3.73 if you go LS, which means you've got a bit weaker rear end than a stock 3.08/3.23/3.27 gear set.. so you will have the cost of a lower gear set and very likely replacement rears as you break those 3.73s. My experience at least...

With my turbocharged stock TPI 350 I consistently ran 7.9x 1/8 and showed a few 7.8x passes on the stock 3.27 9 bolt, while getting 21.5 mpg highway at 75mph. We'll see what the new engine gets.. it will be 350, pocket ported L98 heads and a sub 220 deg cam with stock TPI. Hoping for 18+ and continued reliability of the 9 bolt. I may go to a 3.08 rear as well.

Re: Any TPI's Over 400RWHP???

Most of the aftermarket parts for a TPI you can buy for cheap under $500. The exhaust will cost around for any car $1100. The rest is what you can buy up to $5000. Remember the basic stuff you will need for any combo is a good exhaust system and a good trans. That alone is about $2400. You can't get around it. Just these mods on a TPI will get you in to the misd 13's

@Thirdgen89GTA - Sorry Man It's Just A Bad Habit I Can't Break LoL

@ Vincent - Damn With That Much Money I Would Go With Th E-Rod LS3 Swap. But If I Had A Lot Of Money & A Corvette Than I Would Spend That Much To Fix The TPI Just To Keep An Iroc-Z Original & They Look Bad ***! You Have A Nice Set Up!

@Godreject - Yeah I Know The 373 Gears & Rims Make My MPG Go Down But They Shouldn't That Much But Look At What The Rims Do For Me (This Was Today)

Re: Any TPI's Over 400RWHP???

I had a mild built 355 in my Vett it was ok 360 H/P 380 T/Q.
Until it went south I now have a 383 much better and ya you spend way over your $5000.00 to get the H/P you are looking for.

I so much happier with the stroker motor it worth about 40 to 50 more H/P and T/Q and cost about the same to build.

Heads $1200.00 Intake & Runners $1000.00 Injectors $250.00 Chip $250.00 Headers and Exhaust $700.00 Valve train OEM roller $500.00 Retor fit $1000.00 Flat tap $300.00 take your pick.

Trans a good one $2000.00, Dont do what I did have a local shop build you one it gave me nothing but problems that was a $1000.00 out the window.

Adds it up fast plus heated O2 sender gaskets fluides might as well put a new water pump in new fuel pump in the list go's on.

I pushin 435 H/P and 485 TQ so It around 390 RWHP and 450 RWTQ.

This with all the smog hooked up getting 26 MPG at 70 MGP with 307 rearend.

My only issues is the Long tube heades I mite have to swap them out everytime to get it smoged them mite not.

Put a nice blower or turbo setup on it!

I have made 661 @4900 rpm on a Mustang dyno(reads lower than a dynojet), but i don't count as I was on over 20 lbs of boost and have a built motor...
