who has the fastes MAF setup here??
I'm planning on building a mid 12 second motor this summer, and i will be swapping it in w/ a maf SR setup. i was reading around and i heard that low 13's/high 12's are the limitation on a maf setup...so i just want to get an idea of the fastest maf cars around

I don't think power is limited with a MAF system. I believe the limitation is the factor MAF sensor alone. Some others have talked about replacements that use a different method to measure the air coming into the engine, and is also flows better.

Going to the 90-92 setup isn't that much work and you save the headaches.
You also going to need to learn prom burning to get there, might just archive search the DIY PROM board, and see what others have done.

Tom Panessey from Florida ran a Lingenfelter 420 Vortech SC setup utilizing a stock MAF and ran 10.6-8's at 124mph. It was an 89 custom IROC that's been in a few magazines. Probably the finest 3rd gen I have ever seen!

I could never understand this.... Why do you guys insist on switching over to speed density, yet Ford guys insist on MAF. I usually don't do this, but I will have to agree with the ford guys on this one. To me its a much more accurate way to measure air.

Well just look at what happend with the 4thgen F-bodys. They tried the whole SD thing and then went back to the MAF. Yes I know that the 4thgens have better computers handle it without maxing out, but its evidence enough that MAF is the way to go. Also, your car doesn't explode or anything when you max out the MAF, it just always reads 255. Correct me if I'm wrong, but at WOT, doesn't the system go into closed loop and not even bother with the MAF?

I also vote for the MAF setup. If your car already has it, then keep it. If your are retrofitting an old car with TPI, then go with SD. For the money and time it costs to change a MAF setup to SD, you could spend that on PROM burning equipment to get the car running real good. I think the newer 4th genners do use both sensors, so the MAF setup must be a good thing if GM is still using it. The only drawback I see with MAF is the sensor itself; could fail, costly, takes up space in the intake system. I am only hitting a max of 208gm/sec, so I have room to go before it pegs.

MAF is better than SD, but thirdgen SD is better than thirdgen MAF. Thats why people switch.
The 4th gen engines use the MAF for primary functions. The MAP sensor is a backup in case the MAF sensor fails. GM went back to MAF on the 94 4th gens, because of emissions. Why else would they switch from a cheaper, simpler MAP setup to a more complex, more expensive MAF setup?
At WOT, the ECM goes into power enrichment mode. Yes it uses the MAF sensor and RPMs as a basis for how much fuel and timing to use. Once it reaches the 255 g/s limit, the car is sucking in more air but the ECM is not adding more fuel to compensate, so the car runs lean. That is the problem with thirdgen MAF setups.

Yeah once the maf is maxed at 255, the computer won't add fuel based on maf readings, BUT your chip can be programmed to add fuel up to 6500 rpms, much like programming a SD car.
I've heard it isn't the easiest thing to do, but very effective.

Bigger injectors and fuel pressure mods help that problem tho, but ultimately re-programming is neccesary.
In the end, an aftermarket DFI setup is the way to go.
