Tranny won't engage

Ok, I've just rebuilt the motor. It's a 1985 Iroc-Z, with a 700R4 transmission (L98 engine but swap was done way before rebuild). I start up the car and it won't go anywhere. Park holds the car in place, it rolls in neutral and drive, but won't roll in reverse. So it must be shifting, but why won't it go anywhere? Did I forget to hook something up?

Could it be that bad? I don't think it's shifting wrong, the tranny just won't "do what it's told"...like something isn't connected. It feels like it shifts, just won't engage.

Did you remove the torque converter at all from the tranny? It sounds as though the converter may have not been seated all the way and when you bolted the engine back up, perhaps the pump rotor broke. Did you check the fluid level?

Fluid level is good, didn't touch the TC either. This is really throwing me for a loop. Have any other ideas?

Nevermind, the problem has sorted itself out. I guess the tranny just need a little more time to get all the fluids going. I just shifted a few times, gave it gas, shifted, gave it gas and I could start feeling the pressure build as it shifted until finally it went somewhere. Anyway, problem solved.

Sounds like torque converter drainback (lots of air in the TC), very common in Mopar 727's.
