how hard to change syncros?
A buddy of mines having some trouble with his 5 speed which is in an s-10 with a 2.2.
Hes been told the syncros are shot and wouldnt mind attempting it himself.
How deep in do you have to get for them? Is this a little bit too much to take on?
Thanks, Jon

You basically have to rip the tranny apart. The syncros are between every gear so its basically as involved as rebuilding the whole tranny. I wouldn't recomend this for a beginner but if your up to the challenge.....:lala:

never did a t5, worked on a lot of t10s and muncies. not really hard to do, just press the gears off and swap the syncros. you'll need a press and bearing seperator.

Get a Junk yard trans for the s10 you will be happier.
I rebuild my Camaro t5 and broke a gear while pressing it off. The gear alone was $105. All parts total about $300.
I bet you could get one from the J yard cheaper for the s10.

The synchros hardly ever go bad or wear out. I doubt he needs to tear into the trans.
If his trans is hard to get into all gears without crashing, then it needs a clutch. Maybe just the pilot busihng / bearing; but if I was going to tear one down all the way to do that, I'd go ahead and put in a new clutch, it can't be long for the world either, if the pilot has enough use to be worn out.

thanks for the reply's guys
Its starting to sounds like it is the clutch, at least with the problems hes having thats probably what it is.
I think he just asked someone he knew and they shouted out bad synchros without really examining the problem further.
