Transmission Fluid
I am a relatively new Camaro owner and have a 700R4 automatic transmission. I have read to only Dexron II Automatic Transmission fluid. Any one have any comments or suggestions on using this type or any other type.

There's really all diff kinds of fuild you can use. GM says dex. just to clear them selfs in case anybody messes up a trans useing other fuild.
I was useing type F for years in th-400's, th-350's, gildes, but now found something much better.
The fuilds like trick shift, hot shift, etc is just nothing really more than a colored diff type F fuild.
I came across tractor power fluid, like used in tractor trans., wet brake systems, etc. **** NOT THE HYD. OIL****. What I got is wal-mart brand that crosses to Mobilfluid 424.
This stuff is said to be about the best for performance transmissions. It dont breakdown until somewhere around 395 degrees. Where ALL atf is pretty much done for at
220-240 deg. The tractor fuild is alittle thicker too.
I can't tell you of any probs yet only been running it for about 75 miles, but the trans sure feels alot tighter now, and shifts alittle frimer too.
Look through some of the buick boards like www.turbobuick.com there's alot of post about it on them. Thats where I found out about it

It is very similar to the Pro-Fluid I use & send with the transmissions I build. Bruce (at turbobuick.com) and I have discussed this fluid and others over the years, and have found a couple of oils that work very well. You can use the stuff from him with good results.

An old friend of mine named Bill Taylor (Dana, you'll know who that is....) is selling something these days that looks suspiciously like that stuff, as high-perf trans fluid. Considering that he just about invented the racing auto trans and stall torque converter, there might be something to it.

Re: Transmission Fluid
i've got a 305tbi 91 pontiac firebird. Is this a 700r4 tranny? I live in europe, dont know if i can get a dextron 3 here and i also read its discontinued. What can i use? It's making a small grinding noise when i put it in drive. Any trix or recommendations for a slightly tired tranny. It also takes some time to put it in drive, like to secs, and when i lift the throttle in speed it is making a kind of metallic sound.
