Rebuilding 700R4 Do-it-yourself
Has anyone ever rebuilt a tranny. I was wanting to give it a try. I got a spare 700 sitting around I can't split atoms but I am somewhat mechanically inclined. What tips and where can I get information on how to do it? Thanks in advance

there are a lot of transmission specific tools you would need to get clutches, pistons, etc out. If you can get a factory shop manual for the trans and have access to the tools for that same trans then its pretty easy. If you can't get the tools as loaners I wouldn't attempt it. If I remember correctly there were at least 20 different tools for the 700r4. Hope this helps.

20 tools is a little high of a guess, but there are alot of them, and they are expensive. I won't touch a tranny without the special tools. I honestly don't see how people do them without the tools, but some do, and they do well, others don't turn out so well...
Doing a tranny is not like doing a water pump. Its not a matter of just replaceing parts, because in order to make a stout tranny that will last, you'll have to do more than replace what was bad. I could go on and on about things you should do, things you should NOT do, and things that are personal preference that can go either way, but I simply don't want to sit here and type all day long.

I'v made alot of my own tools , its not to hard to build a auto trans if..... you have low stress , and time . I built my first 700 when i was 19 about 5 years ago now and its still in my car , i would say about 40k later , hard to tell beacuse i had no speedo for about 6 months . I installed the the speedo drive gear in the wrong spot on the output shaft . And i built it in my moms basement.... i did learn one trick about the pump if you don't have the gm tool use a big hose clamp then put the convertor into the pump and tighten the bolts . When i went to install the convertor the first time it wouldn't engage into the pump... took a little thinking but i figured it out .

Not a good idea for a beginer. I have rebuilt several transmissions and they take time, tools and PATIENCE! It can be done without some tools, but you have to be very clever and mechanically inclined to improvise some of them. If you have a spare one and have no need for it why not dig in and learn some things. Thats how a lot of people learn. I would buy a manual and read it over and over. Take it slow, good luck.
