Driveway Tranny Drop

Ok guys, it's coming out once again. But this time with out the help of a lift and a tranny jack. Im sure plenty of you guys have droped a transmission while doing some backyard wrenching. So what im looking for is some tips and things that will make it less frustrating. It will most likely be me and a bud to 2 helping out, Any tips on getting at the middle left tran-block bolt. And any one got tips on getting it out with out needing to remove the distributor? i know that created a hassle last time only because i didnt have much time getting it in and setting the correct timing on it. So im trying to aviod taking the distributor out and all so the engine can lean down more. Thanks alot guys, trying to get it set up for 3rd gen nationals possibly.

I've never removed the distributer or even the cap when pulling a tranny. The weight of the transmition hasn't been enough to make the distributer hit. For the trans to block bolts I got myself enough extensions to reach all the way to the tail shaft of the transmition. Make sure one of them is a "wobble" type so the socket can be on an angle. This works well with an impact gun. A u joint for a rachet is also helpful. I'v found that if you jack the rear back into its normal place it is easier to install the torque arm again. And always make sure the detent cable is completely free from the motor before dropping the tranny. For anyone else doing this without a lift 4 jack stands work pretty well.

get a set of car ramps to use since u dont have access to a lift. the car ramps will help alot.

Car: 1991 Corvette Coupe
Engine: L98
Transmission: 700R4/4L60 same trans different name
i just leave the torque arm bolted to the rear when dropping trannies in my driveway

never had a problem yet

having an air compressor and air tools makes quick work of everything

i pulled a 700R4 at my friend house using air tools and a big tranny jack........had the tranny out in 20 minutes (damn i really need my own compressor LOL)

we just used a long extension with a impact swivel and an impact gun (and good lighting to see the bolts)

i just remove the cap on the distrib........FYI the distrib did make a dimple on my firewall, so yes the engine can go that far back

Just a little clarification on the torque arm. I do leave it bolted to the rear. It is easer to get the arm back into the mount on the trans if the rear is jacked into place that way you're not trying to pull it down against the rear springs and trying to start a bolt.
