Car: 86Z/92 RS Camaro
Engine: 357 vortec finished. need tuning
Transmission: Still works
Axle/Gears: need 3.73
First thing is to get a good car manual such as Chilton’s. Best to use a lift and a transmission jack when removing/installing a transmission but if you do not have that luxury put all 4 wheels on jack stands. Need to at least have the car high enough to remove the transmission out from under the car.
1. Disconnect neg. battery
2. Disconnect T.V. cable form TBI or TPI. Remove distributor cap. This is to prevent damage when accessing tranny to motor bolts.
3. Disconnect wires and cable hooked up to the tranny.
4. Remove gearshift shaft attached to tranny on the driver side.
5. Remove drive shaft. When tilt the transmission, tranny oil will be coming out from the tail end of the tranny. May want to use a plug or stuff a rag into the tail housing.
6. Remove torque are from tail end of tranny. Careful as the torque arm has allot of force and will move upwards once you remove the bolts attached to the tail housing of the tranny.
7. Remove the black plastic cover (4 bolts)
8. Remove converter flywheel bolts (3 bolts) Use a long screwdriver or extension to prevent the flywheel from turning when undoing the bolts.
9. Remove the 4 lower tranny to engine bolts. The upper bolts will get at later.
10. Use a floor jack and place it under your tranny pan. Place a wood in between the tranny pan and floor jack. Raise the jack until it is snug on the tranny pan.
11. Remove tranny mount nut and tranny cross member bar. Remember the floor jack is supporting the weight of the tranny.
12. Lower floor jack just enough to access the 2 upper tranny to engine bolt from under the car. Best to use a swivel type socket and long extension. Careful when lowering, you do not want to damage your distributor against your firewall.
13. Remove the 2 tranny oil lines located on the passenger side. They will leak some fluid.
14. Your tranny should be free from the motor and anything else that it maybe attached to.
15. Try prying the tranny and motor apart. Careful as not to damage the distributor when lowering the tranny. Keep an eye on the torque converter when lowering the tranny as well.
16. That’s about it. Installation is in reverse and if you are installing a used tranny, replace the filter, rear and front seal.
