Delayed Shifting

hey guys,

well ever since I bought my camaro 2 years ago (it now has 175k), whenever I shift from park to any gear, it hesitates and takes about 2-3 seconds to actually shift. it has fluid, but I've never had it flushed and I've never checked out the tranny filter. anyone have this problem? and what can I do to fix it cuz it's annoying.

Thanks!

I had this question quite recently and (my apologies, i forget who it was) told me that it could be the manual valve. I recently got an ATSG for the 700 so I could actually identify this part. It's in the valve body so it could be changed w/o pulling the tranny, I intend on doing this soon, im also going to clean the entire valve body and install a transgo, but ill post how it turns out. Also, I beleive it was five7kid said that it could be an accumulator spring, but i've read quite abit about problems relating to this, and that doesn't sound right.

p.s. can you powershift? aside of my tranny lagging when i put it in gear the only other issue is that i can't manually upshift from 1st to 2nd, it just redlines in first and wont make the shift into 2nd.

Your not alone Josh on the power shift thing. I can't shift from 1st. to 2nd either. It just redlines and from 2nd to drive it will only shift if I let off the throttle a little.

I was told it was the boost valve sticking so I'm gonna try pulling it out and the throttle bodie and flush it as well as anything else I can pull out and clean/check.

I did mess with the TV cable a little bit and at WOT in 1st. it would shift to second on it's own with the shifter still being in 1st.
I put TV cable back to where it was originally to keep from wasteing the tranny.
If I ever find a true cause and fix for this problem I'll post it.

yea, really im just hoping that because it isn't slipping that all my problems are valve body related... so im doing the same thing, im just gonna clean the hell out of everything down there, change the fluid/filter and throw a transgo kit in and hope it works right. ALSO, i was figuring on changing the boost valve to the better one... the 500 or whatever... so maybe that'll help with the powershifting thing. lol, Actually I need to change my front pump also, because I have some horrible grinding sound that is either that or the flexplate and I would like to throw the corvette torque converter in so since I have to drop the tranny anyways, im thinking im gonna put in a 13 vane pump (the best one?) and change the flexplate, that way the noise will HAVE to go away seeing as im not sure which thing it is exactly.

I reset my TV cable to where it's suppose to be and now it's shifting from 1st. to 2nd but it's doing it on it's own.If I bring the car to WOT in 1st it will go ahead and shift to 2nd on it's own.
It does this with the shifter still in 1st. I then after it shifts itself to 2nd I shift the gear shift to 2nd and then to drive @ 4800rpm.
but it is either not going into drive untill I let off the throttle a little bit or it will shift itself from 2nd to drive but at a higher rpm.
I'm wondering if this is normal or not. I just dont understand how it can shift itself into 2nd. while the shifter is still in 1st.

thats definetley not normal... anyone correct me if im wrong, but i believe you should be able to redline the **** out of it in first if you want (also in second). You should be able to go ahead and blow the engine if you're so inclined. Im only saying this because on my last camaro the car had low miles and the transmission functioned beautifully, and that is how it behaved, the only possiblity(of my being wrong) is that the car had a shift kit I was unaware of and im completley wrong in my thinking.

Stock 700R4's are designed to shift from 1st to 2nd all the while the shifter is in 1st. Something about GM not wanting their customers blowing things up, warrantees and all that stuff.

The TransGo reprogramming kit changes the valve body so that 1st may be held to any RPM.

You absolutely certain about that? I had a bone stock 88 tbi 305 that was literally owned by a priest and I got it with under 50k on it, and it held in first until I changed it. It's not that I don't believe you, cause that would make sense, but I just wouldn't have thought a shift kit would have gotten into that car. heh. At what rpm does it shift on it's own?

Great then my tranny's not screwd like I thought.
Just not sure on the 2nd to drive shift. I normally shift it before it gets to 5000rpm but it seems like it still won't shift unless I slightly let off the throttle. If I stay on the throttle it may go ahead and shift but at a much higher RPM. I just don't wanna red line the motor to find out. The one time I wound it out and let it shift on it's own it shifted @ 6000rpm, way past were a TPI quits makeing power. I guess that could be altered with weights and springs at the gouvaner.

The automatic shift from 1st to 2nd happens around 3800-4000rpm.
