10-bolt lubrication

So I am just about ready to start rebuilding my 10-bolt and just going over all the things I may have missed. Which, once again, brings me here.

What lubricatants should I use when doing the rebuild? Should the bearings (pinion and carrier) be packed with regular greese (probably not high temp stuff), or should I use gear oil on them? What about axle bearings?

Then once the whole thing is in, what gear oil should I use. I was thinking 100% synthetic 75w-90, but I've also seen things like 85w-140. What do you guys think?

Lastly, differential is limited slip, so should any additives be added to the oil for that?

When mine was done the bearings were not packed with grease, the rear was set up, then the cover put on, and then it was filled with gear lube. After 200 miles I switched to a synthetic 120-140W that was made by BP Petroleum. It was supplied with the new Homogenizer we got at work. It is also called "Synthetic 320 gear lube" I also went to NAPA and got a tube of "Traction Modifier" for $10.00. It is a light oil like additive that is for use in posi rear ends. I added it first then filled it the rest of the way with the gear lube. Then I let it sit overnight and topped it off again. It took about a pint more after letting it settle. This may not be necessary, but I did it anyway.

On a different note. I used Richmond Gears and they were very noisy at first and at 200 miles seemed to quiet down a lot. The thicker synthetic oil, also helped too.

i always use the same oil on the bearings as i do the rear, 75w-90 mobil 1. you want to make sure the bearings and seals aren't dry when you go to run it the first time.

speaking of making sure things aren't dry... my car isn't actually going to be on the road for quite some time.

is there anything to be concerned about? Or can I just assemble this thing like normal and making sure everything gets the gear oil and then just let it sit while everything else is getting done.

thanks guys

never had one sit long after i got it together so i'm not sure what i'd do. usually i make sure the axle bearings are oiled before i stick the axles in and after it's all together i spin the axles for a minute or so to make sure oil gets on all the parts.

I should have made myself more clear. I would 100% agree that the parts need to be oiled with gear lube before final assembly.
