is trans gov recal necessary??

Hello all. For some this is undoubtedly a really stupid question, but here goes. Is it necessary to recalibrate shift points (via the governor weights and springs) after a gear swap?? I went from the factory 2.73's to 3.23's and it's been really difficult to get the engine to rev to where it did (shift points) before the swap. This is the one thing I didn't think to do when I had the swap done. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The only time a governor recalibration is nescessary is when you would like your shift points higher or lower. You do not "need" to.

No but if you want it to shift correctly again it might be worth the effort. You could order a governer from GM to mach your new ratio rear end. The install is very easy.

thanks to all of you

I followed recommendations for setting the TV cable position I found on this site some time ago. (push button, open throttle all the way and release, hear a couple of clicks, and you're done). It's my understanding that using the TV cable to recalibrate shift points can fry the transmission. so my only intention was to reset it to its proper setting. I definitely need to do something with the governor, as the trans just shifts too early. I was planning to get B&M's weights and springs kit, but I hadn't even considered getting a new governor for the 3.23's directly from GM. That would probably be the best option, but more than likely, the most expensive one too. Thanks very much to all of you for your input.

The TV cable must be tight at WOT or within one click of being tight. (1/16th of an inch of play). Once this is done, then you can make the evaluation if you need a lighter weight governor for later WOT shifts. If you are trying to make the shifts later at light throttle openings, and the TV cable is correct, then remove the governor and take out the light weight (weak) governor spring (leave the stiff one in there), this should help you solve this.

thanks a bunch

I've got to give that a try when I get the chance. It's just so mushy that I barely hit the gas at all and it shifts pretty quickly through the entire range. It keeps me from taking advantage of the power upgrades I've done, so I'll try to get on it soon. Will an entirely different governor with lighter weights and springs delay both WOT and light throttle shifts? I'm figuring yes, but I had to ask. Thanks for the tips.

First you need to do the above, then you can "speculate" as to what needs to be done.

if the trans isn't shifting where it's supposed to in drive, you need to recalibrate it. this is very easy to do and certainly recomended.

A new governor from GM Is $40.00 or less depending how much profit your dealer want's to make.

you're not likely to find a stock governer that will put all of your shift points where they need to be. the ideal way is to set your own shift points. it's good to see that you didn't try to change your shift points via the T.V. cable. many try that and that is 100% the incorrect way to do it.

I don't have a catalog near me, but i beleive Summit Racing sells a B&M governer recalibration kit (includes the different springs and all) for around 30 dollars?

I may have to do it to mine. I know mine shifted too HIGH when i had the 2.73s, but now that i put 3.42s in the car.. i'm gonna see what it does. I may need to mess around with the governer either way

B&M and I believe TCI make kits that have different weights and springs. A "Corvette" governor is available new from transmissionhead.com for $36.00 I believe. The one thing that I'm curious about is whether or not their claim of it being able to put full throttle shifts into the "5200 range" is realistic. What is the "5200 range," exactly? I'm sure that this number varies depending on the car, but by how much?

Right now the car shifts way too low. I've known for a long time about the TV cable and the possiblility of frying the trans. if it's adjusted wrong so that's one trap I didn't fall into. I hope that line pressure being too low won't cause problems. I think that may be the problem, but I'm not sure.

I did the Corvette governor thing when I swapped from 2.73 to 3.73. It did not put it where I wanted it. The recal kit is the way to go. The Vette helped, but it was not right. I found the sprinds in the Trans Go shift kit worked the best. They are a dual rate type.
