I plan on buying a th350 tommorrow or the next day. It was behind a big block in rodded firebird, and the guy told me it has all the good ****, sprag, clutchs, etc. He also noted that it was a Dayco 3500 stall converter in it. I talked to "Herb", the owner of Nebraska Transmission, who is regarded as 1 of the best in the state for tranny's. He told me he worked w/ the guys father for 20 years, and knows teh guy well, and said hes a good guy, so i'm feelin alright about buying it.

But for teh stall... i still got my stock 305 in it, low output, rated at 150Hp. 3500 is definately more than it needs, but i'm wondering if i would be fine? I know higher stalls generate more heat, and i dont want the tranny going to **** in 6 months. Do you guys think running the stall would be acceptable until a nice 350 was thrown in?

I actually kind of planned on selling the camaro after the new trans and gettin a truck, and later on, a bike, so i could just brag about the nice trans and 3500 stall to sell it.

a 2500 would be good for your 305, tha big one is more race oriented.

torque converters rely on applied engine torque to make their advertised ratings. If you put that same converter in say a 550 inch motor it would probably stall to high 4 or mid 5000`s, the other side of the coin is if you were to put behind a 305 only making a fraction of torque that the big inch motor makes that same converter would stall way under what it is rated for maybe 2,000 - 2,500. I`d bet you`d be perfectly fine with it, they do create more heat and lower gas mileage. The primary objective is to get your engine into it`s power range faster.

It all depends on the converter, some are "loose" and will easily stall past their rating, others will only "flash" for a second, just to be safe i would use a 3000 if i were you, one can be purchased thru jegs for 200$ and it is a quality unit. It also depends on how much the car weighs and the amount of traction the particular vehicle has.

see now your guy's replies are interesting, because by reading around, i got the idea that a large stall in a smaller engine will make daily driving a pain in the ***. The whole "me buying the trans." kind of depends on if i will keep the stall.

If i buy the trans. and sell the 3500 stall on here, anyone interested? lol
