700R4 late shift

Hello. Happy New Year! Ok, I have a problem. My '86 Iroc-Z is shifting too late from 1st to 2nd gear. It redlines at 5000 and it shifts at 5500. I can feel it loose power as well, so I'd say it's not the tach being off. All gears shift extremely smoothly under normal acceleration, but at WOT, 1st to 2nd is late. The others are fine at WOT.

I haven't had the car long (about a week), so I don't know when the last time the transmission was serviced. The fluid didn't look bad when I checked it. I intend on changing the filter and fluid over the weekend. Tomorrow I was thinking about trying to adjust the tv cable.

From my research I have found that it could be the tv cable, governor, valve body issues, or...... well you know the next one . I guess I'm just asking for your opinions on what it could be/what I should do. It has 107,000 miles.

How do I check the governor and it's workings? How about the valve bodies? I'm new to transmission work. Like I say, the car shifts beautifully when driving normally, but WOT sucks from 1st to 2nd. The rest are fine. Any ideas on what I should do? I'm really hoping that I don't need a tranny..... I'm no rich kid. Thanks.

Re: 700R4 late shift

Well, I serviced the transmission today and installed a new filter. No luck. I'll try the tv cable tomorrow. If I let of the gas at 5000, it will shift. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: 700R4 late shift

My car worked normal before I put in a shift kit from B&M, but now my car does the samething when shifting into 2nd. I also have a 3.73 rear end compared to my stock 2.73 so I might need to replace my govenor.

Stock TPI motors do not rev much past 4000 RPM, so it exceeds the power band of the motor that is why it feels like it is loosing power. You might have to readjust your tv cable on the plenum, that might be your problem.

Re: 700R4 late shift

Hello. Thanks for your reply. I adjusted the tv cable, but it didn't fix anything. What should I do? Check the governor? How do I do that? I guess it's mounted on the side of the transmission on the driver's side of the car under a round cover? What do I do with the governor to test it? Thanks.

Re: 700R4 late shift

to check the governor remove it. push the inner weights with your fingers while holding the plastic gear towards the sky. you should see the valve inside it move up and down. if it's stuck remove the roll pin without breaking the plastic gear and pry the valve out. clean it with fine emery cloth-brake cleaner-then lube it with trans oil or wd-40.
