Budget 700R4 build/ w upgrades.

Well when I bought my TA a few years ago it only had 1st and 2nd, so being a trans tech I went ahead and pulled it and rebuilt it.

It turned out that it had been rebuilt not long before I got it but the check ball for the TV fail safe was replaced with a smaller than stock ball, this combined with a worn and slipping caused the trans to toast the forward clutch pack into an ugly black mass. the rest of the trans seemed ok... but it turns out the converter is bad.

I had meditated on doing a 2004R swap cause I really like the ratios and stregnth offered in those units but to keep things simple (and because tracking down a good 200 core from an SS or 442 has been impossible) I'll be building a 700.

This is my plan sofar and it only includes the power core portion of the trans, I'm not talking about the valve body or governor just yet.

I'll stare with the stronger K series case, it's used on 4X4 trucks and has the 6 bolt tail housing. Obviously I'll need to use a longer output shaft from a car trans.

I'll be filling that case with 4L65E clusters, sun shell and input shaft. I can pull both units from a local yard and inspect the 65E guts before swapping them into the K case. I can get a RWD trans for just $45 here so it's definitely worth the effort. Ofcourse the whole thing will be torn down at home and given a proper rebuild.

I'm still up in the air about what clutches/bands I'll use and if I'll invest in the available bearing/sprag/roller upgrades out there.

Using the later style 65E input will mean using a later model converter, considering the nature of my car I'll be happy with a mild stall so I'm thinking the Blazer/S10 4.3 converter will work well.

But I'm a bit reluctant to use a used converter again so if a new s10 vert costs close to what an aftermarket one dose I'll just have to step up to one of those.

Fabbing a new X member isnt a problem for me though I believe there are 60E trannies out there with the torque arm mount cast in the 6 bolt tail housing, I cant recall though if the spedo will swap into the later housing.

Any ideas or suggestions for the drivetrain portion of the build? I'm just looking to make a relatively beefy trans considering I feel I would need to rebuild the stocker along with a new converter.
