PILOT BEARING , TOILET PAPER ???
O.K. , now i have your attention . today i pulled my tranny to replace T/O bearing , along with clutch etc. . after a big P.I.T.A. got it all removed . could not remove old pilot bearing . o.k. i have a bearing remover slide hammer . the size i needed had been " borrowed " . oh well , what to do ??? my nephew said , uncle tom , toilet paper , i laughed . well he proved me wrong . wet a sheet at a time with oil , stuff in hole of pilot bearing . push in hole , do again till hole is almost full . then with a drift pin or what ever you might have close to size of bore , tap good with a hammer . hydraulic action will push the old bearing out . worked for me . i had to do this several times with more t/p but it worked . just a homegrown tip that works . good luck . CHEERS !!!

Hey, Uncle,
Still learning after millennia, huh? . I like the TP method. Me, I simply packed the bearing with heavy grease and using a dowel, or some such thing, gave it a whack. My reward? A faceful of grease! The method worked, but it was a damn mess.

Just don't try this with an LSx motor.. The LSx cranks have a oil seal behind the pilot that will pop out and cause a massive leak all over your clutch, and leave your mega-dollar motor running on bearing metal....

Well first, you get the tool from Advance Auto, and laugh hysterically for 20 minutes as the ethnic counter guy can't figure out how to spell your last name. Then you take the well abused loaner tool and promptly break it because it had a stress crack from the previous user. Next, you drive across town to the other Advance Auto and trade the broken tool for theirs... Then you setup the tool in the pilot bearing, and follow the directions three times, each time pulling the tool out of the bearing without budging the bearing. Notice the stress crack forming just like the other? Now this is critical, beat the living **** out of the tool with whatever large blunt object is laying around. Setup the tool again, and ram something between the jaws so it can't collapse, and crank the bearing right out. Then return the nearly destroyed tool, and buy the rest of your parts at the auto parts store across the street...
There are a number of tricks and tips to getting one out... None of them works very well.

Mac has a puller that works very well. It is an extractor type not a slide hammer deal. It isn't cheap for a one time deal but if you use it enough? I would highly reccommend. I like mine works great. Bob

For the bronze bearings, it easy to just break them. Drill a 1/4" hole in one side and whack it with a chisel (safety glasses of course). They are very brittle and just break apart.

iv tried the pack the grease in the hole method and got nothing, i used the puller and it worked like a champ, i also used the chisel method, took a few mins but it worked. the puller for me was the best method. being everything i own is 5 speed (my 83 T/A, my 89 FORMULA, and my 86 S-10)i may as well buy a puller setup for the future.

Re: PILOT BEARING , TOILET PAPER ???
The slide hammer type puller is only like $15.00 from oreilly auto parts. They do loan the tool for free but you need to put a deposit on it(the price of the tool) It worked so well I had them order me a new one and picked it up as when I returned the loaner. I Do a good deal of clutch work and am tired of struggling with those dang bearings, the grease trick has never worked for me so I usually try drilling and breaking them and haven't been real succesfull with that either. The slide hammer tool did take a good amount of beating but my hammer isent very big so I am sure that is why.

Cut up a bar of hand soap and pack it in the bearing. Then simply use a hammer and a socket a little smaller then the pilot bearing and the soap will force the pilot bearing out real quik and leave no mess.

Nah man. You gotta go through the McDonalds drive thru, and get a Big Mac. The 1/4LB-er with cheese will do the job in a pinch, but the Big Mac works best I think. Cram that sucker in the bearing, and then pull the input shaft out of your transmission. Line the end of the input shaft up with the two all beef patties on a sesame seed bun and give her a whack with your Donkey Kong mallet. That bearing will pop right out. I think it's the special sauce that really gets in there and breaks it loose.
