Check the SPID in the console (if it's still there, and correct to the car) and look for the G?? codes. GU6 = 3.42 GU5 = 3.23 There are other codes for gear ratios that were offered, but the differential codes start with the G. In general, 6cyl cars will have the better gear ratios, but they don't usually have posi or disc brakes. Some years/models the 350 TPI came with 3.23 or 3.42 gears, and some of the HO cars came with 3.73's. All of the LG4 and L03 auto cars will have 2.73 or 3.08 gears. 305 TPI autos are hit and miss, most have 2.73's. 305 TPI 5spds usually had 3.08 or 3.42 gears.
Of course all of that only gets you so far. The only way to know what's in the car now is to verify it yourself. You can mark the driveshaft and a tire and count revolutions. Or you can pop the cover and look for the stamp on the ring gear.
Most of the junkyards I used to frequent would write the gear ratio on the windshield, and on the rear end housing to make ID quick and easy, but I wouldn't trust those kind of marks explicitly. Double check yourself to avoid getting screwed.
