Powertrax Lockright- how do i know which one to buy?
Ok so heres the story.. I bought an '86 iroc rear end from a guy off craigslist, and he told me that it had 3.42 gears and posi. I got it home and opened it and NO POSI! I was kinda pissed. Then i looked up the numbers stamped on the ring and pinion (13:42) and its 3.23 gear ratio. Thats ok i guess, because i have 2.72 right now.
Anyways... i want to buy a powertrax lockright locker. But i dont know which one to buy because i dont know how to find out if its 26 or 28 spline and if its 7.5 or 7.625. Can someone tell me what i have? Or tell me how to find out?
Also does anyone recommend anything else that i can install myself? (without removing the whole carrier, because i dont want to mess with backlash or anything like that)
This is the locker im talking about http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PWT-1930-LR/
Thanks.

The lock right sucks. Get the no slip. If you have the axles from the rearend just count the splines on the end.
28 spline = 7.625
26 spline = 7.5
Here's the no slip

i would get this or a truetrac

Lock right sucks? Really? Ive heard great things about it. Also, as far as i know theres not much difference between that and the no slip. What makes no slip better?

They made the no slip cuase the lock rite sucks. The lock rite bangs and clanks all over the place cause its engauging and dis engauging constantly. The no slip is setup with springs so its not as harsh. They lock rite does what it is made for but its not street friendly.

The '86 will have 26 spline axles. The Lock Right is the better locker because it actually works. Yea, it makes some noise sometimes, but it always locks. I've put about 140,000 miles on mine and I drive it every day. It has never failed to lock.

have you ever heard the sound of a horse galloping on pavement? thats the sound the lockright makes every time the rear tires are not moving at the same speed(turning even slightly). i have one and it make a ton of racket but my car is a weekend driver and needs the traction so i love it for that but the noise is hella loud and only gets worse if u install poly bushings and tube controll arms

just some food for thought though. the install is so easy a trained monkey can do it but you have to pull your axles and count the splines to get the right one. key point if you have 26 spline axles you may want to upgrade to a 28 spline rear if you plan on any serious power. i have broken 2, 26 spline axles with my setup and i havent even put down all i can get yet. just consider your future plans because there is no point in dumping money into a rear that you may have to change once you bump up the power.

The installation is easy and the Lock Right comes with very good instructions. Heads up, if you have been doing a lot of one wheel burnouts the locker might not work right. When you do one wheel burnouts it wears the inside of the differential case, which causes excess clearance in the locker. This may cause the locker to unlock when it's not suppose to. Checkthe inside of the case for wear and check the cross shaft for wear. It's probably a good idea to get the hardened shaft that's designed for the locker.
Wear inside the differential case from one wheel burnouts.

I hate to tell you, but the link you have up is for a 7.5". If it's an 86 it'll be a 7 5/8" and no, they won't interchange (about the only thing that won't interchange between the two). Mine's an 86 and had 26 spline axles. The one you need should be this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PWT-1932-LR/

By the way, mine works real well, when it's locked, it's LOCKED. You just have to learn to drive a bit different, as it'll drag a tire if you don't coast around a corner. As long as you're off the throttle, it'll release fine as you turn. Noise hasn't bothered me, then again, I'm running uncorked headers so it's not like I can hear much of anything besides the motor.

I've got one of those Powertrax noise makers too. Straight line- Great! Turning, it disengages, however slow speed turns, like in a parking lot, it does the lock jumping. People thought my car was falling apart. But I wanted cheap and easy posi, and that's what it is. A step up from poor man's posi. Just not a big one.

Wow, I cant belive some of the comments. These are performance cars, NOT caddys
Yes the lock rite clicks and it does jerk some but its NOTHING to worry about.
I had one in my 1988 with 7.625" rear. Heck I couldnt even hear it over the 2.25" dual pipes and flowmsters. It out lasted two of those 10 bolt rears in mine. Now it's installed in my 64 year old dad's firebird and he loves it. The clicking don't bother him at all, in fact only other non car people notices the sound. I have a ford 9" with a full detroit locker in it. Now that beast I can hear over my new dual 3" exhaust!
The no slip is quiter but its not as strong. Alot of broken no slip stories. The lock rite is much stronger
Look up the numbers on the pass side axle tube. It could have been swapped around.
82-85 is 7.5", 26 spline axles, 86-90/91 is 7.625" with 26 spline axles, 91/92 is 7.625" with 28 spline axles.
My rear was stock to the car, but my dad's 82 bird had a bad rear in it when he bought the body, so we went junkyarding and got a 1986 3.42 rear for it.

Re: Powertrax Lockright- how do i know which one to buy?
we're not expecting caddy ride or sound but when i can hear a horse galloping next to me in a parking lot ( locker disengaging) over my 2300 watt stereo then i vote its a piece of junk. wish i'd never bought it but thats just me. like you said though great strength low cost and truly locks but lets face it only old men with hearing problems and slightly younger men with the same hearing problems (probably from standing too close to the speakers during a bon jovi concert...lol) wouldn't complain about the noise.
