The complete diff won't fit because the third gen uses a torque arm mount.
The posi itself probably won't fit because it will use 28 spline axles. There's a very good chance your 89 still has 26 spline axles.
The 3.73 gears may or may not work. It depends what series carrier is currently in your diff.
You could buy the posi and gears then try to find 90-92 third gen axles or aftermarket 28 spline axles. The only junkyard axles that will fit in a third gen housing are from another third gen. There are no others the same length.

The differential will be a Governor Lock. These are not the best. There are a few weak parts in this unit. If you have much power then you might break it. If you have 3.23 to 4.10 gears now the 3.73 gears will work with what you have. If you have 3.08 to 2.41 gears then the 3.73 will not fit your differential.

I made that swap in my 1989 iroc,is a 28 spline. As mention above is a mechanical system. I was able to run the car probably about 15-20 times at the track before it broke, I used street tires and the car was running about 14 flat. If is just costing you time I'll probably do it and keep all your original parts in case you have to go back. by the way only the center part fits(carrier & gears), not the housing.
