10 bolt rear question

will a posi 3.73 (ring, pinion, and carrier) from an 82 camaro fit in an 89 camaro rear end housing. it has 2.83 in it now. i was doing reaserch on here and cant tell if it will work, i have found in 85 the rear end goes from 7.5 in to 7.625 and i also saw the ring gear will work on any year carrier but i want to know if that carrier from the 82 will fit in my 89.

the kicker is that the guy im looking at buying this off of said he does not know what the gears came out of but he has it in an 82 camaro. he claims this will work in my rearend. just want your feedback on it.

Carrier spline might be different. Your 89 I believe has 28 spline axles. The 82 would have a carrier for a 26 spline axle. Everything else will swap no problem.

I assume the 89 is a 10-bolt (should it be a 9-bolt there'd be no interchange). No 2.83's. The 89 most likely has 26 splines, but you may need to count them to be certain. You may find useful info in the following link:

You do know that you will have to set the pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash when you do the swap. Why not just swap the whole rear end?

Re: 10 bolt rear question

i was going to get the whole rear for 150 but for some reason the guy took all the gears out and apart so im guessing i would have to do all that stuff anyway so its cheaper for me to just get the gears

thanks for that link but that is where i already go alot of my info. i have not pulled out an axle to see what spline it is. but is sounds like from what you guys say ill be ok to get the gears. if all else fails and the carrier does not work i can get an aftermarket limited slip diff from eaton or somthing but they are like 520 from summit

Re: 10 bolt rear question

As long as you have 26 spline axles it will fit. If you have 28 spline axles you could get the axles from the other rear end if they are still good.
