not going into gear
700 r4 tranny not going into gear. It will sometimes and other times it won't. My shift cable from inside to the linkage is a bit worn. And the linkage is not the standard way. Idk what its supposed to look... I'm very agitated, I just put this transmission in and it shifted well for a few days then stopped... I need assistance please! In an 84 trans am with 350 in it..700r4 trans

Re: not going into gear
Update:
Even when I get under the car and manually put it into gear on the tranny, with a buddys help on the inside, just to make sure its not the linkage. Same thing. Will only work sometimes, I hear what seems to be a very very faint metal on metal. Only when its starting to engage into gear. I don't even know where to begin. What's my first step. If it shifts sometimes and when it does shift, its smooth. Then could it be bad? Please and thanks in advance guys.
It does pump tranny fluid when a line is removed. And it filled a quart pretty quickly. I feel the pump is either good, or at least working. I was told it could be a valve body issue. I do not know anything abt the valves n a transmission. Tranny fluid is brownish red, not black. Was told filter could use a replacement, but it worked and shifted fine for awhile, it always had a problem going into fourth/overdrive. Should I pull it and put a new one in, or with my limited funds, can I do something cheaper. Thanks again. Guys.
