Remove the seal with a flat head screw driver, and evenly tap the new one in with a block of wood and hammer.

Driveshaft needs to be removed first.

re: rear trans.seal replace whats involved?

DO NOT tap it in around its edge!!! It will leeeeeek, GUARANTEED, EVERY TIME.

Instead, take a 2x4 and hole-saw a large enough hole in it to fit over the end of the mainshaft, and nail it to another piece of 2x4 without a hole; set the seal in place; set the wood against it; and with one mighty whap of the B(est)FH you can find, bonk it in there.

Consider taking the extension housing off and running it over to the neighborhood transmission shop, and having a new bushing knocked into it. Seals basically NEVER fail of their own accord; about 99.999% of the time, the reason they leak, is because the thing they're supposed to be sealing, is wobbling around instaed of running straight smooth and true.

Or of course, replace the seal 2 or 3 times, curse a little bit about what pieces of crap they are, and THEN fix the true underlying problem to the symptom.
