questions on new gears in rear

i did a huge amount of mods to my engine (well went from a 305 to a 350) then added a bunch of mods to that 350 (all is visible from my signature). I now have the original tranny and gears in the rear, and someone made a comment that i really should upgrade my rear gears given all i have done to the engine. Can someone elaborate on this, and what should i consider upgrading to? I have 2 camaros and this one is mostly my toy/project so although mpg is always considered, it's not my daily driver car. what rear mods should i consider to maximize torque/rear hp, withourt going crasy? also will my tranny be ok, or is that something i need to think about also, its the standard auto trans that came with the 305 automatics? thanks.

Re: questions on new gears in rear

Putting better gears compliments and makes more use of the camshaft. 373's are what I would do. With your 2.73's aka highway gears, it slows down the motor per say and you dont get its full potential. I would also do a small stall converter, like a 2500 or so will go a long way also. MPG's with the new gears and stall will only be down a 2-4 depending on how you drive. As far as how long the trans will last, thats hard to say. Depends on mileage and abuse. They are not known in stock form to hold up well. Mine lasted two weeks behind my 383, but I have heard of some lasting years.

Re: questions on new gears in rear

It will run you about 7-800 in parts but i went with a eaton posi unit and richmond 3.73 gears and was going 12.6 on a 350. It made a amazing difference for the launch which is a big deal in the 1/4 and it never ran out of gear in it either. The gears are 200 bucks but its not really worth the gear if your not hooking so the unit for 550 is def worth it also. I am running it now on my 383 and its going low 11 but not sure how long itll last but for 12-13 sec i ran it for 3 years almost.

Same with the trans the 700r4 is great for strip cuz the steep gearing then the od is great for highway. throw a decent shift kit in it and it last long long time. Throw a corvette servo in also and you will chirp 2nd gear with ease sometimes third if u got the power. I was chirping 2nd with a 305 with intake manifold.

Just perosnal opinion but i had three motors two trannies and two rears in the car since i started with it but hey still learning here two.

How much power you think your playing with to radical or street power
