Swappin rear

Replacing the rear on my 88. I have located two rear. The first, the guy doesn't know year or what it came out of, but it is a 9 bolt, 3.42 posi, disc brake. The second is an '85 out of a Camaro, it looks to be a positraction rear, 10 bolt unknown gears, also disc brake. In the pics he sent there is also some sort of gear for a speed sensor maybe?? Anyway my question is which would be the better route for my '88 Sport coupe and I'm guessing I'm gonna need a master cylinder maybe prop valve to go from drum to disc. Thanks.

Re: Swappin rear

The 9-bolt is the better/stronger rear end & if the 10-bolt has a Speed Sensor then it from a 4th gen which is 4" wider. If you have stock 16" 3rd gen wheels then it would still fit, but if you have stock 15" wheels or any aftermarket wheels, then it will depend on the backspacing of the wheels as to whether or not they'll stick out past the fenders.

As for the prop valve....MAANY have done the drum to disc swap & not touched their prop valve & been happy with the brakes. Others feel like it is required to do. Put the new rear in, drive it & decide for yourself if the brakes work for you or not.

Thirdgen 10-bolt info below, to include info on the master, combination valve (I'd recommend swapping to the proper valve for your application or using an after market), speedo gears and so forth:

9-bolt info here:

Re: Swappin rear

Not a big difference in strength between the 2, easier to get parts for the 10 bolt and a lot more choices for gears if you ever do a gear change. But like what was posted earlier make sure the 10 bolt is the width you want.

Mark.
