Posi Choices

I am looking into swapping the 4th gen rear end internals into my 91RS with L98/700R4 to get rid of my 2.73 and open dif... I dont want to do the straight swap to 4th gen because I don't like the wider track, and love my wheels to much to change them, and I don't want to do a 9-bolt because of the expensive parts...

I don't race (street, strip, autox, or anything like that), never sees "spirited canyon" driving, rarely sees highways.... only "spirited" driving would be the "stop light drags" here in southern CA to change lanes when no one wants to let you over... Also, the car doesnt see a lot of miles, only put ~60k miles on it since 2001

I know that there are 3 main options for posi that can be easily swapped in and found for fairly inexpensive: Eaton Gov-lock (82-88), Auburn (89-97), and Zexel-Torsen (98-02)...

Now to my questions:

Which one of the 3 posi units wouldbe the best for a DD/street cruiser? I know that to run an Eaton, I will need new 26 spline axles (because mine are 28 spline), so I would think that one would be last choice due to the downgrade in strength... Any benefits of one over another?

I would like to change out the gear ratio at the same time, and would ideally like something in the 3.08-3.42 range. Most of the ones that I can find all tend to have the 3.73. Would there be any benefits to me to get a 3.73 rear? I know the benefits of the 2.73 & 3.08 are highway economy, and the 3.73+ are acceleration on the strip. What do the different gearings do to street manners/mpg/drivability?

Re: Posi Choices

Of the differentials that you listed there is only one good choice, and that is the Torsen. The Gov Lock is also available in 28 spline, so you don't have to downgrade the axles to use it. The problem is that the Gov Lock is much too weak to use in anything more than a stock S10 truck with stock tires. The Auburn is just a piece of junk period. There is nothing good that I can say about it.
