removed auto tranny without converter
hey there,
so i had this engine and tranny out on the floor and decided to separate the tranny by just removing lines, bellhousing bolts and then pulling the tranny off the engine in axial direction...which after a little prying went fine really.
now i heard that the torque converter can be damaged that way, mine is still bolted to the flexplate.
what and why could be screwed now?
thanks for the input

Re: removed auto tranny without converter
It should be ok if it slipped off easy. When you reinstall you have to take the converter off the flex plate and put it in the trans before you put the trans back in. The reason is you have to rotate the converter as you push it in to engage the splines from the input shaft into the converter. If I remember correctly it has to engage two or three times. If you don't rotate it as you put it in it will damage the pump of the trans. Hope this helps

Yes, I read about the converter engaging thing with the clicks when I did a little reading before I separated engine and tranny. But I'm still not sure what could go wrong when pulling the tranny off without unbolting the TC from the flexplate?
