Sound of a failing rear/unbalanced driveshaft?

My brother just bought a 92 RS 3.1 T5, while I was driving it home though, it made a howling sound coming mostly from the rear of the car. It didn't start out like this, only once it had been riding for about 30 mins (hot) and started when I was doing 60mph ~ 2100 rpms. I've never experienced either so I have no idea what these problems would sound like. We're thinking possible wheel bearings failing as well or low oil level in the rear... btw, its NOT a posi.
