Fuel injector maintenance

Just wanted to see what the general consensus is on fuel injector cleaner. I just got my car back from the shop and it needed 4 new injectors . So, I am wondering is any of that over-the-counter-pour-in-your-tank stuff good for our injectors? I usually add a bottle of the STP complete every three to six months

The Helms manual states that fuel injector cleaners should not be used with Multec style injectors. So I'd say never.

Do my injectors need cleaning? I'm guessing so. Will injector cleaner clean them? Probably not, but I might as well try. Every mod I make doesn't really do anything or makes it run worse (that and my exhaust gets louder everytime I drive it).
The way it idles and runs I think I really need new injectors.

You have multec's in your car, Drew? Did you notice any improvement with 'em? Did the book say why not? I know the Multec's are less prone to clogging up... but I didn't think cleaner would ruin 'em.

There should've been another option... "when I remember to"! Speaking of that, ya know, ever since I had those injectors cleaned by Rich @ Cruizin', I don't think I've put any fuel treatment in (including regular fuel injection cleaner or dry gas) in! Oops. I better go buy a bottle today.

GM rochester switched to the multec style injectors in the late 80's, so yes my 3.1 has multec injectors. The helms manual, and service bullitins state that the chemicals in fuel injector cleaners will damage the injectors. They also state that the multec injectors are self cleaning. Anything added to a tank of gas other than gas stabilizer is snake oil. That combined with the fact that they could possibly damage the injectors tells me its not worth the trouble.

Also when you consider how many GM products use the 2.8 and 3.1 there are more than enough junkyard injectors in cirulation to put together a good set.

Thanks for the info, Drew! The 2.8 rebuild book I have said that only the FWD 2.8 Gen II motors received the Multec injectors.

Its easy to tell the injectors apart... the pintle style injectors have the stepped sides, the multec injectors are smooth sided in black or gray with a silver ring at the bottom...

From the TPI swappers guide...

These are late 2.8 or 3.1L injectors... Third from the right is an oddball, not sure what its from but its not a 3.1, 2.8, 5.0, or 5.7L injector.

These are the 3.4L injectors I have for sale...
