Need help tracking down a miss.

My plugs, wires, cap and rotor are all pretty new. Only about 3 - 4 weeks old.

My car is some times missing. It will do it when I take off a little hard in first and secound gear. Some times if I let my foot off the gas in fourth and then back again (no my RPM's are not dropping to far only 100-200 rpms) it will also do it. I have also noticed that my MPG as dropped, but that could be due to the strong winds. If I take off slow and smoth it doesn't happen at all. It's anoying the crap out of me. So hopefully some one can help me out a little.

No codes are poping up.

1992 Camaro RS 3.1L 5 speed.

Most recent work was my radiator so I don't think I screwed anything up there.

It could be, if you didn't tighten the hold down bolt enough, and the distributor spun. Got any exhaust leaks?

I made dam sure that bolt was tight. i didn't want to have to try and get at it a secound time!!!!!!!!!

Could an exhuast leak really make it miss and hesitate like that??!!?? have never had one so I don't know. It doesn't sound like it has an exhuast leak, but I will check. My timing light is on the way. So when it gets here in about 20 - 30 min. I will check that to.

Ok I checked the timing it is dead on the money right ware I put it a couple months ago. I decided to yank a plug from each bank and get a look at it. My #5 plug was covered in white coating. I checked with my brother a while back to see what that was and he said that it was running too lean or the timing was off, but it only happens to this one plug. It has done this sence I got the car. Upon inspection of the #6 plug, well lets just say I found a big problem!!! Only the top half of the plug came out ( my smoke fell out of my mouth when I swa this!). I was able to get the rest of it out of the head easy enough, but it showed verry little sings of ware. I only pulled the 2 becuase I was running out of day light and i have to get up at 4:30am to go to work tomarrow. Fortunetly I had a brand new spare plug to use.

I took it on a quick test run and it still has the miss and hesitation, but the car runs strong other wise. If I mash the pedle I don't notice any change in power unless it hesitates. This is the klick in the head it doesn't do it all of the time.

With only the #6 plug fouling is this a sign of a bad head gasket?

OH!! Karl the timing chain hasn't replaced yet. I am going to pick up all of the parts after work tommarow, but I won't be able to change it for a while becuae I am scheduled to work for 9 days in a row. The car has 188,000 miles and the timing chain has never been changed. In fact it was next on my list. Well it was higher on my list of things to do, but the radiator decided it wanted to be replaced first.

well enough rambling from me. hopefull one of you will have some helpfull insight to end this problem. Just as a side note I did check all vaccum hoses even though I have replaced all most all of them all ready and they seem to be fine.

Thanks for all the help!!!!!!!!!!!!:hail: :hail:

Cool, nice diagnosis. Could the #5 cyl have a bad fuel injector? I wonder how the rest of the plugs look. And aint' that always the sht? I went to pull my plugs once, just to look at them for the hell of it, and wound up ripping 5 out of 6 of my MSD plug boots- causing a severe undrivable misfire! The wires were loose on the plugs. Luckily, MSD hooked me up with free labor on repair, and I doubled up the silicone dielectric compound inside the plug boots, but still- a 10 minute job turned into a week of hell! (I managed to find 7.5mm plug wires for $10!)

Yes an exhaust leaking causing a miss. At idle.
I found this out on my 85 Bird.
Never happened on my 211,500 2.8 Blazer, tho.
Look for white powder marks/dark forced air marks, there's your leak.

Well I can most likly rule out the exhuast leak, becuase I think I licked the problem!!

Before going home from work I stoped at the parts store and picked up a new set Autolite spark plugs. I figure I might as well replace them all sence that one cracked in half. While i was there I got an idea. Get some throtle body cleaner and clean the IAC and throtle body/ entrance to the intake. Sence I did both at the same time I don't know which one fixed it. Oh well, at lest it is running the way it should, but it would have been nice to know exactly which one was the problem child!

If it was the spark plugs then these ACDelco plugs suck monkey nuts!!!!! they were only about 2 mabye 2 1/2 months old. When I cleaned the IAC and passage all kindas of crap came out of it. It even had black gunk caked on the IAC it's self. The throtle body and entrance to the intake were no better.

The funny part of all of this was that you couldn't tell that it was missing while it was idling. Now it idles smother then it ever has! Which is a nice bennifit to all this.

The fuel injector may be bad. I never thought of that. I haven't sent my spare set to be cleaned matched yet. Getting laid off back in Oct. set my plans waaaaayyyy back. I will send them off in a couple of weeks swap them out and see how it goes.

Once again Thanks for all of the help!!!
