I owned 2 v6's an 84 and an 87, both were great cars, great fun, very reliable. I ran the 84 up to 8300rpm once by accident. It was still running great when i sold it with 300k km's. But we can all agree 18 second quater miles arent much fun.

One thing i do disagree with is this awesome mileage you all brag about. Its not so much the size of the engine as the gearing of the car.

My 91 l98 6spd vette would get 34-35mpg highway with the cruise control on and was hardly awake at 1600rpm.

My current vette an 84, cruises at 1900rpm and manages 29-30mpg. The difference is mainly due to the gearing, and being an auto but the lack of point injection also plays a part.

The only bad part is having to buy premium octane, but the vettes get better mileage with the high octane, its actually cheaper(by pennies) to burn 92 and get a few mpg better than to burn 87. But that has to do with the high compression and timing.

Also insurance isnt a factor, at least for me in canada. I paid the same 150CND a month to insure my 500 dollar camaro and my 15,000 dollar corvette.

Keep working on them, being the underdog is fun, i should know, my 84 vette is the rodney dangerfield of the vette world, no respect.

The mileage for me is amazing, cuz when you go from running 7 or less mpg motors to a 30+ mpg motor its like a gift from ***. :hail: :hail: :hail:

My Dad may have bought the old 1966 I had ($1,750 in 1972, all intact original),
BUT
I PROMISE YOU.
I knew what I had.
And I was 16, too.

He was trying to fake you out.

Read about this V6 Again, if you know your stuff then a V6 can be fast. V8's are easy to build and make go fast, and believe me at 17 years old I've built my share of them. Why not give yourself a little challenge with a 6? Opinions are like buttholes we all have one. I am known for bein the different guy, so obviously doing something different makes me feel good. If I wanted to be like everybody else I would throw in a stock 350 TPI and say look my car is the same as yours, but thats not me. I'd like to say haha I have 2 less cylinders than you and im still faster. Just think, thats 2 less connecting rods to replace.

when i first had my V6 yes i would have disagreed

later, even before i got my Z28, i realized that trying to up these motors is like beating a dead horse..........theres no point, its a waste of money, they are pigs (i only get 19 MPG), they are slow cars to begin with, to get them to run 15's is really hard work

now, i can say i am glad those kids in automotive school made fun of me for having a V6 camaro

now, i have a 1991 RS 3.1 thats a beater.........but let me tell you, its the nicest looking beater you've ever seen

the 60* V6 was not originally intended for performance
the Small Block Chevy on the other was ALL for performance

i drove a 305 TBI 1991 firebird in work today (i had to replace the ignition module on it), and let me tell you, it DID NOT feel anywhere as slow as any V6 camaro i drove

the people who tell me that they beat 305 TBI cars with their V6's, i'm sorry but i do not believe you anymore........unless it was really ragged out and beat to ****

i'm really sorry if i seem like i turned into a troll, but this is my take on things

if you dont like it, i never said you had to buy a V8

i only hope i can push wisdom and some thought into your heads before you waste your money

funny, wasting money..............i have $8000 into my 1991 3.1...............whats it run 17's

just think of what i could have had for $8000

i realize that there is a creativity point of view here by trying to use a V6

well, i thought i was being creative too

and about the clear taillights...........i honestly dont like them, at the time i was just trying to pacify camaro_hunter_d.....................good luck getting your headers

yeah, but that money will be spent elsewheres trying to make your 6 fast

sadly, whatever you do to a V6, anybody else can do to a V8 and be faster

Theres no creative point . I just think V8s in these cars are overrated . Sure they are fast , but I think they are overrated .I could think of about $2000 , if that much , to get my car in the 15s but I guess thats a waste of money . Having a 2.8 which everyone thinks thats slow run mid to high 15s , what a waste of money Sure its not 13s or 14s . but i think its damn good for a V6 and thats all I need on the street . Hell Id be happy with a 15 second stock Iroc . Sure I know you and others maybe thinking well you could get a V8 and make it run 13s or 14s or 12s thats kinda boring to me . I mean everyone knows it can go fast , its a V8 ......People thinking the 2.8/3.1 is a waste of time . I think its very unique and I think there pretty damn surprised if they see one run 15s .....One day when I get my V8 though , I'll come back in here and tell you guys how its not that much better . I've driven em and been em 2001 t/a's , even SS's . I just think they are overrated .

Life isn't just one big race , every stop light isn't a race . And I will be the first to admit here , I do like some rice cars , VERY few of them are done in good taste . I have seen some fine ones done in good taste . I think some of em are SO COOL , a low 16 second civic . ..I repeat VERY few of them though . Life just sounds like one big race to you . Id hate to live like that , Id be scared of getting killed or Id kill some inocent bystanderd .

Oh please Glen , give me a freakin break .
Im not a jealous person , never have been . My parents offered to buy me a new car a few weeks ago . Could have gotten a used Z28 if I wanted . I opted for that because I like my car so much and I just think V8s are overrated . Now put that in your pipe and smoke it !

As for ***** , I have ***** to buy em , But , I dont want that right now . It all comes down to , I dont have room in my driveway for two camaros , two grandprixs and a Cadalac Escalade .

So what , Im 23 years old and still in college . Prabably will be there till im 25 but know what ? Does not matter because I just found my nitch in life . I still live at home with Mommy and Daddy . So what ? ? ? I wouldn't be on the face of the earth if it wasnt for them . I dont work because " I dont have to " Im an only child . But I can tell you this , Ive busted my *** working in the past harder than you ever will in your life .I did landscape work , I did plant work . I've been around . Im not ganna argue with you on here anymore . I think this shows disrespect to the board , Dirk , and our Moderators of this forum . But if you want to send me childish e-mails flaming me , go ahead , I will be sending the next one straight to AOL to report you for harrasement .

I could also sit here and play this " lets see who can get nastier " with one another argueing game . But Im not , thats just a waste of time . Im tired of wasting this much time on you , Plus I dont wanna dis-respect this board and members with nasty post and nasty name calling as I did in the past . Im not going to post anymore in this thread Billy , please lock this .I would say remove it , but I would like for him to see his warning from me , that I will report him If i receive anymore e-mails harrasing me .

When people say V8's are fast, what do they mean, fast top speed fast 0-60, fast quarter, fast 1/8 or what is it? Any car can go fast. My v-6 gets around 8 secs 0-60, that is night and day difference compared to a civics 12 seconds, in road racing thats about all that counts- light to light If I slap some 4:11's in my car and take it against your stock V8 Bird, I would put my slip on it that I would beat the hell out of your V8 in my road racing life. Like I said quite a few posts ago, there are so many variables in here, you have to put all of them into play. Think more than just the motor my friends, you can build the biggest motor you want, but if the other variables arent put into play, your V8 aint gonna go much more than the V6, you got gearing, how to get your rubber to the road, weight, tire size, and all those other things. You can throw a 2000 HP motor in one of these cars, but not mess with everything else and you still may not beat a stock 6. On a handicapped race, what matters? Getting your tires to stick, if you got too much power and not the right suspension setup or whatnot you aint gonna beat that slower car. You are going to knock seconds off your time spinning the tires. This whole topic is like a born again christian arguing with an atheist about there being a G*# lock it up. Ok my 2 cents are put in im ending. later.

thats a very good point that there are alot of factors

my Z28 will be geared as follows:

(i'm not 100% sure on the tranny gears, so heres my best estimation)

4.08
3.25
1.75
1.00
.78

and my rear gear will be a 3.23

that is a V6 T5 i am using.......thats why it has such a low first gear

(please bear in mind this is not a wish list, i already have these, tranny and rear end)

i'm kinda lost for words because Ex-Ford-Guy made a good point about street racing

i dont think everything is a race

i race for fun and the thrill

my main idea with my Z28 is to see how much bang i can get for my buck

thats what i am building it for

Thank you 1991tealRSt-topGuy, knew I had a buddy in here. If I win or I lose its all the same to me, no excuses. But seriously V8 or no V8 just about any car can be an *** kicker in street racing as long as you know what you are doing. Heaven forbid these ricers be beating us though...eeeek lol. Then the self esteem would take an extreme blow. My goodness look at what some of these 4 bangers are running, its sickening, why dont you leave us 6'rs alone and go to a ***** forum and pick on them and tell them how much of a waste it is to soup up a 4 banger. At least our motors dont sound like WAL-MART weed-wackers. Like I always say to my buddies about their cars: Hey at least it's American and rear wheel drive. Whether it be Ford, Chevy, Buick, Lincoln, you name it. But when you build a V8 that will beat ANY and EVERY V6 on the planet, then you come to me and tell me how horrible 6 bangers are.

when i agreed with that guy about acting like ricers, i was dwelling in my own self pity

when i was looking to buy my first camaro, it had to have three things:

5 speed
V8
t-tops

on my way to the mall one day, i noticed a teal green 1991 RS for sale

i was HOLY ****, stop the car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i got out of the car, looked T-TOPS AND A 5 SPEED!!!!!!! SCORE!!!!!

then i called the lady, a V6

being the fool i am, i figured i should buy the car anyway, because it was in pretty nice shape

so here i am $8000 later, with a nice looking car that runs 17's

and i feel like an idiot for it

maybe now, some of you have a better idea where i'm comming from with my own experience

I kinda had the same experience with my Bird: I was searching hard for a rear wheel drive V8 5 spd car, Mustang, Firebird, Camaro whatever, I had $2000 in my pocket and it was burning a hole. I had said something to the guy I'm working for and he was like oh my brother is selling a Firebird. YES!!! Called him up, stopped over, and bang there it was a bright red 5 spd firebird, he was selling it for his step-son. Pretty nice shape, new rear tires, interior real nice except for the headliner, engine rebuilt not long ago, but needs alignment and new front tires. Ok so go get the keys so we can pop the hood on this bad boy. DAMN it V6! Too bad, I took the car home the same night. One big challenge ahead of me, but yeah well. Is it worth it? In my opinion I think so. Its no V8 but I still get stares.

thats great

i think my V6 is a great daily driver

it gets stares too

so i bought my Z28 to go fast

its funny, becuz right now, my fast car is ugly and needs a paintjob

and my slow car is beautiful

all i was trying to say in this post is that if you want to be able to go fast without a hassle, i'd recomend an 8

i'm not really sure what my V6 car runs

i think 0-60 is about 9 seconds

to me, thats not that fast

if there was more of an aftermarket following, i can see them being quicker

one problem is that there is no true aftermarket heads for them

and theres a limited camshaft selection

a simpler intake would help also i believe.............

anybody know where i can buy a lower 2.8 intake??

i have some ideas i would actually like to try out................

haha, same story here.....was looking for a 91-92 V8,5spd,T-Tops...long story short I ended up with a teal 92 RS v6 auto...gets all the "stares", and puts many others to shame...but I wouldn't mind having the V8.
