OMG OMG OMG!! Just got the trunk hatch latch assembly in, and yeah, it rocks. Damn that's such a cool feature of the car.
Ok, now to order a rebuild kit, and pull it back out. The nylons need replacing, and I figure middaswell replace the grease, too...
Don't mine me guys, I did the same thing when I got the interior lights working :lala:

Man the power trunk does rule.
Except for its extreme crushing power, I always thought it would suck to jam a finger cause it would crush it.
I destroyed an ice scraper cause I left it on the sill, and the trunk crushed it.
But my key never worked for my trunk so the only thing I had was the magic button in the car. Although it was weird, my trunk would not pop unless I had my e-brake pulled up atleast one click.

Does anyone know how to get the hatch to shut if you hit the button without getting out of the car? I'm just curious if it's possible. {I don't know if mine doesn't work right, or if the GM engineers didn't bother with making it work that way.} just wondering...

What I meant to say was this. If you accidentally hit the button, and your hatch opens. Is the button supposed to close it as well. or is it only to open it. I'm just wondering if there was a way to do that. Sorry for not clarifying my question.

Actually, the hatch will open in Drive or Reverse, as long as your E-brake indicator is on. I've tried it in my driveway, and yes, the motor is a nice thing, except when people slam your hatch shut.
Oh, and that comment about how to get it to SHUT... yea there's a feature, it's called old hatch struts.
BTW, third jenn, where in so cal are you? You'd be another cool chic who likes thirdgens, aside from my girl...

But if could have been a safty feature. Guess I never really expected a saftey feature like that. wouldn't matter anyway the struts were so gone if you didn't race the power trunk it would end up poping and reclosing in seconds.

If you mean popping the hatch, then just tring to get it to close again? without actually lifting and dropping? no go. You have to have some force to get it going down.

third jenn, that is a good play on words. I am surprised that you used a pic of yourself in your avatar, since most women on these boards don't show any pics of themselves, come to think of it, not too many guys show their faces either.

I don't have one. It would be nice to have a keyless trunk opener. I have trouble putting the key in the socket at night. Plus when I go to pick up someone and they need to put an oversized item in the trunk, I don't want to have to turn off the engine, and walk to rear to open trunk. I rarely use my trunk though - when I go shopping I put all of my things in the backseat. No one sits back there so they might as well be put to use. I like the security of buckling up my grocieries to ensure my avacados don't get smashed by the cornish hens and gallon of milk.

I guess I didn't expain right. I meant that I don't have the trunk release switch on my dash. I would like to have a remote trunk release via a remote instead of installing a dash mounted trunk release. Yes, you can have a power lock and have it opened by remote; you just have to attatch a certain relay and hook it up to the power and lock. I have one myself, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I still haven't installed my power door locks yet.
Third jenn,
Any pics of your car?

I heard somewhere that the motors for the power trunk constantly blew.. I talked to a guy I met once who claimed he went through 3 or 4 of them before he gave up. Maybe that's why hardly anyone got them....? I'm content with my stinky, no-frills trunk. Just need to re-adjust the latch mechanism..I gotta SLAM the thing to close it.

i have power trunk
i have a power trunk, but it is broken the hatchback got slammed the guides broke, motor siezed up and it won't work any more, so now i just have a non-power latch, and will replace it all when i het a chance, alone with the supports that couldn't hurt. but i loved it while it worked, you could just set the lid down after taking the t-tops off and go. i like the feature even though it is a little extra work.

With the power lock, you are supposed to gently push it down until it clicks and from there you let the power lock close the hatch for you - it is a very tight seal. The sucking power is amazing. Who ever has gone through 3 or 4 obvioulsy abused the lock a lot, probably by slamming the trunk down, since you are not suppossed to do that.
#35
I guess I didn't expain right. I meant that I don't have the trunk release switch on my dash.
because that is what I was talking about...my 92RS (w/ power trunk) doesn't have one....and my 84SC (without power trunk) had that button....
I was just trying to explain that they are two different features/options....so we don't get the two confused....
basically....the "power lift hatch" and the "interior hatch release button" are different options, and can be had seperatly....that's all.

Wow.. getting lots of flak here for a freakin' comment, aren't I?
lol, I didn't mean anything by my comment. She said she was envious of my newly fixed power trunk, and I, in a fairly lame attempt at humor, tried to come up with something of hers I could be envious of. Feeling that any sort of truly sexual response to that would be way out of context, I mearly sought innocent flattery.
Jeez, at least she realized that!
Tho I gotta say, I'm pleased so many of you guys jumped to her cause on it. Shows there are some decent fellows on this board
Either way, I'm loving my power trunk assembly

Hey, glad to see you got one! I haven't been to the boneyard since the last time. Should I keep looking for servicable hatch pull-downs for anyone?
Also, the power pull-down will CRUSH a 3/8" dowel no problem. I did this as a test when I got the car. Just wanted to know if there were any safety features incorporated with it. I guess not.
So, we can break fingers, but cannot pop it on the highway. Hmmmmm... Great thinkin' GM...

Call Pick Your Part as they are having a 20% off sale & free entry with passing of canned goods.
HAPPENING SOON at the one in Sun Valley (near Memory Lane).
YET their good stuff is behind a paying gate once ya inside the yard for free.
I need better passenger fender as my Wife altered the fender lines (I could be so sexist-BUT TRUTHFUL!!........).
Luckily the nicer front nose wasn't put on car, yet.

I always thought every Fbody came with a power hatch pull down. I like mine. When I broke my original one from trying to pull it back up after it was still in the closing process - I had to really slam the hatch down to get it to lock in manual mode. I don't want to have to slam anything.

Hey Karl, where's a junkyard that will have Fieros? I don't really like the one in Sun Valley. I want to find some Fieros for the valve covers. Probably when we pull them in Dec. for the ticking... might as well replace them with nicer ones painted to match the car. Who's the guy that did that on here, painted them teal... nice job!

I do need another pair for my Blazer!!
Besides, it's fun to explore!
I don't want to have to slam anything.

PS: Be sure that you hear a "click" when it reaches the bottom of the cycle. That is the reversing switch being tripped. If it stops before the reversing switch is tripped the motor will still be energized and run down your battery (and ruin the motor). Adjust the unit up a little until it trips the reversing switch.

Hmm, only a few can claim to have a unit that looks exactly like the one that I posted. There are a few things that quickly distinguish it from the original that GM made. First, notice a round red spot in the very center and an orange stripe further down on the lower right side. These are both a security seal I put on the re-built and re-manufactured hatch pull-down units after they pass testing. Also the latch assembly is painted a color called Midnight black metallic. The frame is painted silver metallic. If this is indeed yours, please provide me with the serial numbers that were on the security seals so I can match it up and return it to you.
Lon
PS: A few other things that distinguish this from an OEM unit. 1) Superior nylon guides, 2) a reinforced motor housing and 3) a warranty.
