Just with degreaser?! DAMN...LOL!
You're going to repaint it that same color though, right? That way, someone might mistakenly think that it's a BIG BLOCK! LMAO!

Re: My 3.5 swap project...

lol... if i can get some new media for the blast cabinet i might just glass blast it then paint it with clear engine paint.

I was going to use the chevy orange for the block but black hides grease and dirt better.

Yeah, can't say which I'd go with. Sometimes, seeing oil/fluid leaks easier can be a good thing. Unless it's going to be a show car...

Re: My 3.5 swap project...

Here is a pic of the front ride height after i cut 1.5 coils from the springs.

i have the springs indexed 180 degrees out right now, it'll probably drop another half inch or so once i move them back to the stock spots.

pretty much down to plumbing and wiring now.

Re: My 3.5 swap project...

Ok, i modified some 4th gen accessory brackets and had to do some more work to the timing cover and the water pump but the accessory drive is all figured out.

FYI, the 4th gen PS pump bracket is pretty neat, it's got a mounting pad for the DIS module and coils which puts it in a very handy spot.

The wiring is a mess right now, the drivers side bulkhead is still all stock Camaro but i snipped out and yanked what was left of the old 2.8 ECM harness and replaced it with the 3.1 harness from my 91 Z24. in the next few weeks i'll finish up the wiring and deal with the other random problems that are coming up.

Sadly it's not going to make it to the dyno this friday, i'll just have to spend my time tuning everyone elses stuff instead.

More pics and updates soon.

It's easier than modifying the 3.1 brackets

3.1, the alternator bracket will hit the TB, and a lot more drilling is required, with the 3.4, it's almost direct, you will just lose 2 bolt holes in the whole swap, some bent metal will take care of it, but honestly - why do you need so many? I eliminated the third member of accy's on dozens or cars with various engines, and never had a problem or warranty call for one. Working in a machine shop for the past several years has giving a new understanding on how mechanical (and electrical) devices work.

Still have to enlarge the bolt holes on those buggers to match the new heads, right? Guess I could sell off some more aluminum brackets. BTW, what headers are on that engine with the 3.4 brackets on it?

Re: My 3.5 swap project...

Got about 80% of the wiring done and finished up the alternator and PS pump brackets today. Also got the TCE external trigger mounted, just need to space the brackets out 1/4" to match the crank pulley.

Combining the 91 Cavalier ECM harness with the '89 Camaro body harness turned out to be a lot more work than i thought. Most of the wiring is the same colors however the injector wiring is routed a completely different way. The Fuel pump relay and OPSU wiring was a bit different as well. I ended up using the Jbody setup instead since it was intact.

The only major thing left to wire is the radiator fan relay and the fan itself, still need to pick up a V6 radiator so that can wait. Wire loom will come when everything is in it's place.

I just happened to look underneath the car today and noticed that the Hooker catback has terrible ground clearance now that the front springs have settled. I think i'm going to have to pull out the I pipe and cut a few inches off of it to try and tuck it closer to the car. I have maybe 2" clearance right now.

Here is a current pic.. the wiring may look like a mess but it's all where it needs to be, most of it will be fairly hidden once the new upper intake is on.

you can see how i sandwiched the TCE trigger wheel between the crank pulley and the dampener, this version of wheel's design required me to drill through one of the spokes for one of the 4 pulley bolts. At least now there is no chance of it spinning behind the pulley.

Re: My 3.5 swap project...

These should perk it up a little more. I had to make up for the extra power loss of the auto trans somehow.

They came from Marc at TCE, This is currently the only set but he may be making more someday. Tuning is going to be fun for sure. There is a balance tube that goes between them that's not pictured, i may try to engineer something with a little more volume though. It all depends on how the MAP signal looks.

I still have to port the adapters out to the 3500 gaskets, but now i know where the IAC and TPS will be so i can start looming everything.

Re: My 3.5 swap project...

Just a thought here, but I wonder if that alternator could be moved down lower on that bracket where I'm guessing the A/C condenser was, there is a lot of weight sitting pretty high on that current setup.
Also not the ideal place to ask but I figure you know the answer purple T/A, what is the third wire on an alternator for and how do I switch from 3rd gen 2 wire to 4th gen 3 wire alternator? I swapped in a 3.4 and am going to use the serp setup instead of the multi v belts.
And that plenumless intake is beast,lol-you know that thing is going to have bad streetability like that right? Course that wouldn't stop me...how much did it run if you don't mind my asking, I've thought about trying to find one before but figured I would have to have one custom made, would be cheaper if someone already has one designed.

This one...

as for the alternator, it is pretty high on the engine but works for now. I do plan on making some new brackets someday but for now it does the job.

that bracket and alternator are from a 4th gen, the plug just had 1 wire coming out and of course the terminal in the back was hooked up normally. I've got the old plug from my Jbody alternator in it now which is a 3 wire. I haven't wired it in yet. When i do i'll post the details.

I'd rather not post the price of the ITB's but i will say they weren't cheap. I think first_firebird was working on a cheaper alternative out of production pieces. Maybe he can comment on that.

It shouldn't be too bad to drive on the street, i'm more worried about the 3500 stall than the intake. lol

Re: My 3.5 swap project...

Actually yeah, I guess cowl would be the way to go for that, since it has the filters on top like a carbed car, and yeah, I recognized the bracket and alternator :P When you say you just have one wire coming out, you mean the 2 wire plug style and just left the one pin not connected to anything? kind of like plugging in a 3 prong electric cord into a 2 prong extension cord backwards? What does the 3rd wire do...cause I honestly have no idea...
And what size cowl is that? I'm guessing a 4 or 5"?

Re: My 3.5 swap project...

I'm working on a sheet metal filter box that will bolt to the stacks and seal up to the hood when it's closed. The plan is to use a 4th gen K&N aimed at the back of the scoop. It should work out pretty well.

I'll get a pic of the alternator plug tomorrow after work.

It's a 4" Harwood bolt on hood.

Yeah, Marc made those from billet aluminum, no where near cheap :P

I have an idea, but first we want to release the 3400 swap kit for the f-bodies we will be having some new intake designs this year, should be interesting for the carburated guys

Re: My 3.5 swap project...

Thanks to Pillsbry10 i now have the accessory drive complete. He hooked me up with a proper PS pump pulley.

I don't have any new pics but the alternator bracket is now lower and basically in the stock 3.4 location. I modified a spare 7x trigger wheel and bolted it directly to the dampener so now the crank pulley isn't spaced out 1/8". This solved a bunch of issues.

Last weekend i replaced the fuel lines with a good pair from an 88 Z28 at the junk yard and installed the proper VSS. Still left under there is the torque arm mount to fix and i'm going to swap to a 1 piece trans crossmember with some extra clearance made for my exhaust.

Up front is some fuel line routing, hooking up the 4th gen lower radiator hose and finding one for the upper, then a little more wiring work.

It's coming along slowly... i'd still like to hear it run before winter.

thats pretty cool... i like the k-member. Ive heard of people doing this swap, also in s10's. my roommate is a big fan of the 60 degree... he owns a 3500 turbocharged fiero, you might know of him from the v6z24 site. he had a cavalier also.

Not really much happening, i started working on a custom trans crossmember to gain some exhaust clearance but that's about it.

I might end up looking for some stock V6 front springs, mine were in pretty bad shape and now that they have settled i don't think that i'd clear a speed bump. haha

I have another project that i need to take care of for a while, gotta finish building a mild 3400 to put in my old '91 Z24 so the new owner can pick it up. I also need to put the trans together, the interior back in the car and find a wiring harness. All before November 1st.

Just pulled mine out a few days ago. Too high for my tastes, with me no longer having A/C or an auto transmission. LMK if you want a pair. They're a little rusty, but the factory P/N and ID tags are still there (BXR).

How well do the aftermarket ones sit on the V6 cars?

Re: My 3.5 swap project...

I don't have mine yet... Bit of a ways off for that. I've got a lot of cleaning and de-rusting to do before I get new springs in the front (I figure the rears should be good as they already sag about a half inch). It's kind of a pain finding non-A/C manual springs for the V6...

That'd be the problem right there... Auto weighs more than manual. Plus you've got the spooly thing and it's associated pipes and intercooler.

Re: My 3.5 swap project...

I had dropsprings on mine for a while then took them off, now that the hybrid's in I may put the fronts back on just to see how it looks and if it gets alignment closer to where it should be. Not happy with it now, steering's sqirrely and looks bad.

Re: My 3.5 swap project...

yeah, I couldn't believe the height difference when I mocked up an aluminum top end in my car. Almost looks like the motor is out haha. I have an iron head 2.8 on a stand along with various motors in multiple stages of completion and the weight difference is HUGE. I weighed a 3500 with the steel crank, stock exhaust manis on, minus the p/s, a/c alt, was 340lbs on the button.

Re: My 3.5 swap project...

What's the estimate on how much the 3.4L V6 out of a 4th-Gen weighs? Just curious...

most of the time when people put new springs in it raises their car due to worn out stock springs lol
