I'm looking into a cam I want to put in my 383 stroker. I was reading about a CompCam Xtreme Energy 274 I believe, and it said the cam has an RPM range of 1800-6000. Would the idle be too rough for a stock converter, or would I need to get a stall converter?

I'd go XE268 to be safe. 383's are lower-rpm torquers, anyway, an too little of a cam is better for sure in this situation.
XE268 is a great cam, too. You will LOVE it and stock tc is ok.

Thanks alot! That helps me out so much now. I really wanted to go with the 274, but which ever you think is best, cuz I don't know enough to want to chance anything. Would the 268 still have a really rough idle, lope, or whatever it's called? I'm looking for a nice rumble. Thanks again.

If you have a roller block then the Cam that you would be looking at is the XR276HR. This is the 224/230 Xtreme energy roller grind. Furthermore, there are two part numbers for this cam: 08-423-8 is ground on a 110LSA and 08-503-8 is ground on a 112LSA. Go with the 08-503-8 if you are using EFI and go with the 08-423-8 if you are using a carb.
I would consider this cam a good all around cam for that motor. However, more power can be found with the CC306 cam (230/244 on a 112LSA - this is not an Xtreme grind). But, your intake/head combo would need to be able to flow what that cam demands.

All Natural. No Force. No Drugs. Stock Bottom End. Stock Body Panels.
Gunning for NA 11's with bigger cam, bigger stall, and bigger exhaust.

I just checked out his page and he is going to be using a carb. The 'HOT' cam is way too small for that setup. I would recommend the CC306 cam (230/244 w/ 0.510/0.540 lift all on a 112LSA).

Roller block? You mean if I'm gonna go with a roller cam? I really don't wanna do that because of the extra $$$ I'd have to fork over. Yes, I'm going with a carb. A Holley 750 double pumper. I'm also going with Trick Flow 23* Heads. Will this work with a regular tappet cam?

I guess if 450hp/450lb-ft min is not enough for a 383cid, then yeah, the Hot Cam is not enough. IMO, if looking for 450hp or less, ue the HotCam. It is PROVEN/DYNOED stuff and rather inexpensive for a roller. Also, you want to use as little cam as possible to reach your expectations.

The CC306 is a proven performer too. It can generate 400rwhp (over 500hp at the flywheel) with the proper heads/intake on a 350. Its a moot point though. No roller for him. I say the 224/230 Xtreme cam on either a 110LSA or a 112LSA. If it were me I would bump it up to a 230/240-ish cam on a 112LSA. But, that's me.
No matter what ... a good Torque Converter will be needed for a good ET (in order to achieve an awesome 60ft).

I really don't wanna sound too stupid here, but I have totally lost you guys.
1) I don't want a roller cam
2) I don't want 500 horse
When I put the 383 in, I want it to be streetable, and still get decent mileage with it. AND, if the only reason for a converter is for better ETs, then I'll skip it, cuz I'm only gonna be racing this car maybe twice a month.

In that case....
Dump in the 224/230 CC Xtreme cam ground on a 114LSA. It will be super streetable, pull good vacuum at idle, and still have good power. Make sure that when they grind the cam they do so with the standard 4 degrees of advance that they usually use.

I mean no disrespect. However, if you have to ask what a 114LSA is then I would seriously recommend picking up a book on camshafts and valvetrains, subscribing to a couple of performance magazines, or doing a search on the net to research and understand as much as you can about cams. Competition Cams' website has a lot of information.

Yes, I know what lobe seperation is, but I didn't know that that's what the LSA stood for. Besides, doesn't CompCams camshafts come with 110LSA?

I think Traxion is right. You gotta go to the Comp Cams catalog online and check it out. We could talk about this stuff for years...
All kinds of lobe seps available, depends on your app. Go to compcams.com and check it out.
