MSD distributor cap?

Does anyone have a MSD distributor cap for an HEI ignition with the coil in the cap? I am looking to get one but i can not find one for my car! I have a distributor from an 86' 305 tpi. The one i got had totally different screws than what the distributor can take. When i called Summit to get the "right" one they had told me that the one i had was the only one for my car. This i find out after i mailed it back of course. He said possibly i could rip out the new screws and put in my old ones from my stock cap. Anyone do this? Also, anyone use any other caps from other companies? How do you like them? Any suggestions? Thanks for your time-Bryan

i always used ACCELL caps and rotors on my old hei distrubutor. they were fairly priced and readily available at ADVANCED AUTO PARTS stores. i never had any problems with them.

Thanks, that is what i am now considering. I already have the MSD rotor installed so i may have a problem returning it and the Accel cap only comes with a rotor. So i just may get the kit! I just want to know if anyone is using an MSD cap on my same distributor. I also like the red cap too! lol Thanks for your help, and hell yeah the Accel parts are inexpensive!

I went thru the same process when I had my '86 T/A and finally found out MSD does not make a cap for '86 HEI distributors with the screw on cap..internal cap mount coil. The only cap they make for HEI's is the older L style spring clamp.I ended up going with the Hypertech cap and coil kit which worked very well for the two years I had it on the car till I sold it.

So i am not alone than! Cool, thanks a lot. There really is no difference between caps, is there? I was looking at the Accel and the Hypertech as alternatives. I might just go with the Accel since it is only the cap and rotor. Where as the Hypertech comes with the coil too, which i do not need since i have upgraded to the MSD 6AL ignition box w/external coil. Thanks a lot for your help guys-Bryan

Fast3rdgen, the caps you used, were they the "L" clamp or the screw in? The reason i ask is b/c i just ordered mine through Summit and the guy could not find a screw in for me at all! All i was looking for was the cap. So i settled for an MSD with the port for an external coil. I guess i just will not use the dust cover that came with the 6AL kit. He had told me that i might not have an 86 distributor in my car. I don't know what the hell is up with this. Oh well, the new cap should work. I would have went with the Hypertech but i do not need the coil and i believe the kits only come with the cap, rotor and coil. Thanks again for your help.
