I dont think it will help our cause any if we random guys are calling TA performance every 5 minutes and asking about the status of this product. I think they would get sick of us quickly. I think the best possible solution is for TA Performance to talk to Dwain directly, and let him keep us informed of the status. All TA Performance needs to do is look at this thread to see how serious we are.

Let me say first, that you guys are doing a hell of a good job addressing the need for new third-gen products. Your on the right track, so please don't take my getting involved as getting in the way.
I just got off the phone with Dave and the owner Mike over at TA Performance. As you guys know they are waiting on the rear end section to get started.

Also, Mike mentioned he needs to know how much room there is for the cover, this will influence how they design it. I would take the measurements but my rear is out of the car right now. SO, somebody needs to take some measurements from the mounting surface of the rear cover to the closest obstruction, which I would guess would be the panhard.

I told TA I would approach Rick Jensen about running a story on an Aussis rear cover when they build it, I am hoping between the interest you guys are showing on thirdgen.org and a potential product showcase in GM Hi-Tech would give them the confidence to invest the tooling in a new part, and hopefully hurry the part to market.

I will gladly take some measurements on both and some pics and get them up here as soon as I can. And thanks for throwing the GMHTP name up to bat for us. Now if we can just get some cheaper gearsets/posi units we would be golden.

when i had the 10 bolt in my car i had a LPW cover and the only part that hit the cover was the sway bar. but it only hit the LPW name on the cover everything else was good to go.

I have been following the thread and am devoting every penny to my current transmission rebuild/ new torque converter. When the cover comes out if i have had time to save and the price is within my reach i will be in for one also. Thanks for all the effort, -John

Measured it today....2 inches between highpoint on cover and panhard rod.

3/4" between high point on cover flange and rear swaybar.

No other critical obstacles in there other than those two potentials.


I just bought a new camera...so I'm still figuring it out. Measurements were the same on the 87 and 89's as I knew they should be. Feel free to double check against your car, better safe than sorry.

There's nothing to update. TA will let us know when it is ready. They have recieved alot of inquiries about it and Dave has been to this site and seen our response, so they are well aware of interest in it and want to get it out as soon as possible. He said a couple months at least to get them made, and that time-frame isn't even up yet. Still a waiting game. It's gonna happen.

UPDATE:
I just got off the phone with Dave Sommerville @ TA Performance. He said that the pattern has been made, and once it is inspected and approved, the mold will be made so that the castings can be made. So it is well into the design stage already.
Dave also said that upon inspection of the stock case, they didn't like the bolts used on the caps so they made a high-strength stud kit to replace the cap bolts. Those will be available with the covers. That was never discussed before, so that was a pleasant surprise for me!
I know that they are also working on a cover for another application, so by designing 2 covers at the same time it does add a little time to the process. He said that his best estimate would be around 2 months until they're available, but rest assured that they are DEFINATELY making good progress on them, and we will have them available soon!

He also hinted to a POSSIBILITY of once the covers are made, they may look into making high-strength billet steel replacement bearing caps for this rearend. Once the covers are produced they will be able to look into it and see if it would be beneficial or not.

Now if we could just talk them into making a bunch of different ratio gears for it at a reasonable price!

I tried reading through most of this thead but it's pretty long... so sorry if my question was already answered. Did TA Creations give you an anticipated final price or price range for the new cover? I'm far from getting one yet because there are more pressing issues on my TA, but I want to know about it for later on. I commend your hard work in getting this product out to market!

Neither are definates. Price is estimated to be the same or close to the price of their other covers. All of which are $159. The stud kit would probably go for 19.95 with purchase of a cover or $25.95 seperately like their other stud kits. He mentioned once that they would have to sell roughly 60 covers to recoup development costs, so I assume that was a figure derived from the current price of their other covers. These prices are estimates, and Dave said that the price will be determined exactly once design is finished and a prototype is made. Then they can see what kind of numbers they're dealing with.

Dave has never mentioned if they will produce any after this run or not. I would assume that how well these initial units sell, and if they are still in demand will determine if it's marketable enough to become a mainstream product. But that's really a question you'd need to call and ask Dave.
