Exhaust Systems

i went to my local muffler shop, and the guy told me that if i ran a dual exhaust that i could only put little short glass packs on the ends, but i didnt think that was right, he also said that i couldnt run anything bigger than 2.25" pipes, is all of this just a bunch of bull****? cause i cant be runnin stock single exhaust with my new motor
does anyone know of a company who makes dual exhaust system 2.5", but NOT a cat back, here in soldontna, alaska we dont have emission laws, just noise laws, so no straight pipes thanks for any feedback
also my car is an 84 Z/28 with a 350 stock manifolds, but want to put full lenght headers

You're best bet will be to find a single exhaust system that will work for your engine setup. Only a few people that I know of have done a true dual setup on a thirdgen and had it work right. The usual problems are ground clearance, tubing interfering with other parts of the car, and insanely high costs to do the modification. Camaro's and Firebirds have one of the best flowing, most efficient single exhaust systems. Going with a single 3 or 3.5 inch system would probably handle your motor, providing you go all the way from the heads to the rear bumper with quality mandrel bent tubing. Check out the exhaust message boards, there's quite a few people talking about dual exhaust in there. I know this probably isn't the answer you're looking for, but what you do is only limited by your imagination and your wallet.

He's right, it is one of the most efficient designs, except for one fact, dual outlets. If you find a single outlet and some good headers, a 3" system will out flow dual 2 1/2" (minus any x-pipe)

i have a teacher that hs duals on his Malibu SS with the stock 350. He says that dual exhuast did cost more because he had it bent properly, but it evened out with the crappy headers he was able to put on. It's basically the same car.

If you have a wild cam and are making your power in the 3-7000 rpm range, than duals with an X pipe is the way to go. At that speed you will have negative back pressure. That's right, the X-pipe will actually suck the exhuast out! But it is useless under 5000.

Duals are cool...I would like to have them too, but with all the associated problems I would go with the largest single pipe you can run. The cross-flow for the motor actually helps to balance the exhaust, hence why the Corvettes have a cross-over in their duals.
