Summit Racing Thread Chaser/Cleaner
I am currently rebuilding my motor and needed to clean out every possible hole out of the block so I could have the proper torque values.
I had originally ordered a full set of ARP Thread Cleaners, but it came out to be a total of some $100. Ouch. For about a month JEGs had them on backorder, and with time running out, I cancelled my ARP cleaners and ordered up a set of Summit Racing SUM-900200 - Summit Racing® Thread Cleaning Tap Sets.
I am very very impressed. For the price of ONE ARP, I got a complete set of SIX. They worked flawlessly and very very efficiently.
I highly recommend these as a much cheaper solution than ARP.

good post/reminder of an often overlooked task . many home engine builders neglect this important task . best of luck on your engine build .
Re: Summit Racing Thread Chaser/Cleaner
Summit seems to be a great company for everyone. To include myself.
What I have run across is I don't think Summit makes anything of there own. They just resell brand name under there name usually cheaper.
My Front sway bar is "Summit brand" but is actually UMI. Came with UMI stickers, directions, etc...
All that said I use those alot on whatever, anything that is gummed up or dirty at all.
I have a Craftsman set though. Can't remeber what it cost now had it for a couple years.
Good thing to have alot of people don't know about.

I have a set of Summit valves, but the further I looked into it they were Mallory, just repackaged. They were HALF THE PRICE of the Mallory's during Summit's Black Friday sale.
JEGs and Summit both repackage things that they sell under their house brand, and I have tools/parts from both. Always very happy with the widget I get.

I was wondering the same thing about their micrometers and other measuring tools, anybody know who makes those for them?

Re: Summit Racing Thread Chaser/Cleaner
definitely some good looking pieces, thanks for the review.
ended up making my own when doing my lsx swap. the head bolts are metric and a bit oddball in size, so buying chasers would have been huge money for a (hopefully) one time job. used a cutoff wheel and made a couple from my old head bolts. gets the job done if you're in a pinch for time/money

I know this is an old thread, but are these long enough to go all the way down into the head bolt threads in the block?
Looking at them, they look really short.

Re: Summit Racing Thread Chaser/Cleaner
Youre not going to chase head bolts with these. On my LS motor, I was going to cut one in half, and weld the cutting end onto an old 1/4" extension. But I ended up making my own. I also made my own for the other ones, as the thread chasers I had were worn out.
They arent as hard as taps, because you dont want to deform or cut new threads. They are meant to just straighten out any burrs and clean out the thread.
Also, autozone will rent you an entire set of metric/sae and also include the dies for free. They arent horrible quality, just make sure the one you rent isnt all beat up, if it is, ask them to order another set in for you. The dies are GREAT for when you have to shorten a bolt to clean up the end of the thread.

All the other chasers worked just fine for everything else.

Re: Summit Racing Thread Chaser/Cleaner
I did the same for my LS build. M11 thread chasers are, well, hard to find, and when you do find one, it's excessively expensive. Cutting a couple slits into an old bolt is a great, no-cost way to make your own thread chasers.
